This is a discussion thread titled "How to update the map on the AVN5495?", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just put in the new disc(if its dvd based). I believe its the same way for the HDD, it just downloads it to the HDD. Dont have the HDD version, so not 100% on that one.
Can someone please answer this question? How do you update the map on the AVN5495? I can't find anything.
I don't see any map updates for the AVN5495 on the Eclipse website. There are two updates listed but they're not called map updates. You can check them out at the Eclipse site under their Support heading with instructions as to how to copy then load them into your unit.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
I already tried that and no luck. I know there has to be a simple way because out of all the reviews I read concerning the AVN5495, I never read that updating was a problem. Thanks guys for your replies so far.
I have good/bad news for AVN5495 owners. Maybe this will help someone else wondering the same question. Eclipse has NO map updates available for this unit at the current time BUT they said that they are currently working for an update on this unit with NO estimated time of release.

Just got off the phone with Eclispe. I will never buy an Eclipse product again. This is unbelievable!!!!
1. To update your AVN5495 maps, you will need to send the unit in to Eclipse! They will swap the hardrive with an updated one. But wait, it gets better!
2. They will provide this wonderful service to you for only $300.00 plus shipping.
I am glad I went with the dvd based nav instead of the HDD based nav. I still think eclipse is one of the best brands.
When I bought the unit, I thought Eclipse was the best. But now that I factor in there non-existing customer service after the sale, they are at the very bottom in my book. NAV units should get map updates at least every couple of years. They know this. Requiring the end user to pull a dash mounted unit and send it in is just absurd!
Mine is now for sale too! I also have the HD Radio and ipod interface, I am including in the sale.
What a hard lesson learned for as much as I paid for this crap.
Eclipse you suck! I hope you go out of bussiness!

You would not say that about Eclipse had you bought the AVN5495.
Another little unknown "gotcha" is the fact that it will only rip songs at play speed. So you have to listen to each song as it records (and you can't listen to something else while this is going on, like the radio, or your ipod). That takes a long time. Swaping the hard drive means you lose all of the songs and have to start over.
You also cannot copy songs from your ipod. You have to listen and record. The recording does not retain the song tags, so you will have to rename (not easy to rename). Very slow if you want to poplulate the hard drive to use it as a "Jukebox" as they advertise. ipod interface is almost worthless. Can't search for songs. Can't browse songs, and you can't create a play list. Example: You have a play list on your ipod with 100 songs. You want to listen to song 50. You will have to press next 50 times to get to it (no scrolling/browsing with the nice touch screen this unit has.).
If you record from the high def radio, the recording doesn't keep the song title even though the high def radio had the name and artist. Renaming 1 song takes several minutes. Deleting a song takes just as long. Not the best user interface. Very slow. Seems to be CPU starved. Its a great prototype unit, but not ready for prime time. Hey, but don't listen to me, I just own one!
Elsipse failed to give that info in the hand outs!
