Unhappy Need help with AVN5495

Hey, I purchased an AVN5495 a little while ago. Everything seems fine except the speed sensor wire is missing the protection circuitry. I was told that a diode was actually used for the protection circuitry. The question is what kind of diode and how should I install it. I originally bought a zener diode 1N4742 12 Volt from Radioshack. Could this work?

Eclipse wants $40 for a new harness but if I can just put a diode there, then I will only be out of about $.99. Help.........please.

Just a late update. I fixed this problem with another diode. It was pretty easy.

I went to Radioshack and got it. This is what Eclipse told me "a 1 amp diode the band is facing away from the unit".
