GPS and Navigation AssistanceOEM Car, Aftermarket and handheld navigation discussions.
This is a discussion thread titled "Eclipse Navi Unit 5435.", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey there. I just installed the Eclipse AVN 5435 Navi unit in my car. The unit does operate properly but there seems to be an issue with the navi menu. Once i insert the cd I am not able to input an address and check the maps and routes. The option comes up as a Grey icon on the screen and will not allow me to enter anything. I just hooked up the wires that powered on the unit and gave me sound. I do not have an updated disc of any sort, just the one that came with the unit. Since i did not have a manual when i did the install i was just wondering if I left anything out. Can anybody advise me on what may be the problem and how i might be able to fix it.
Yes. There is a wire that needs to be hooked to the parking brake. The NAV functions are not available until you depress the parking brake.
You can simply ground this wire to the vehicle chassis to fix the problem.
There are two other wires that need to be connected.
1) Reverse sensor wire
2) Speed/Pulse wire
Of course, you will need to attach the GPS antenna and mount it as well.

thanks a lot for that advice. I have grounded the parking break already. And i had already attached the antenna for the navi unit to pick up the signal. The navi was working perfectly, it picked up the streets i was driving around once the install was complete. I was just not able to enter an address in the navi menu. I am just unclear as to why the speed/pulse wire needs to be connected and why the reverse sensor wire needs to be connected? Also do you know the colors to those two wires you are referring to? And to where they need to be connected.
Just a thought, but make sure you are in the right region. The map screen will work, but wont let you input destinations if you are in the wrong region. Its that little map (of the US and Canada divided into numbered regions)on the left side of the destination screen. You must set it for the region you are in. I think default region is #1 east coast.
Sorry, its not region but search area. Default is search area US1 (Pacific northwest- Oregon, Washington. And its not it destination screen, its in the memory point screen. Looked in owners manual to me sure. I have the 6610, but should be similar to your 5435.

Thanks much!!!
The main function of the reverse wire is to activate a backup camera when you put the vehicle in reverse. I don't know if it has any other functions.
If you have software version 1.2 or lower, you have to have the speed/pulse wire hooked up. The NAV unit guides by GPS and the speed signal from the vehicle.
That could very well be why some of your NAV functions don't work
There was firmware released in version 1.4 and newer map discs that did away with the speed/pulse wire requirement and allows the NAV to do turn-by-turn directions using GPS only. I think this was done because some vehicles don't have speed/pulse wires and the voltages varied greatly between manufacturers.
If you are interested in a newer map disc, send me a PM and I can hook you up.

According to my AVN5510 manual one of the reasons for hooking up the reverse wire signal is to reset/correct trip mileage and time to your set destination.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
Hello everyone ! I'm new I'm mainly interested in the 5435 and found more info tonight on the unit than a year on another site. I purchased one thru the net and was wondering what color are the buttons on the sides, with the upgrade can you play a MP3 with a higher bit rate than 128 and when you type in,lets say burger on the nav.,will it show all the POI's of burger joints in area.
Thanks !
