This is a discussion thread titled "GPS where to mount besides windshield?", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hi guys, I tried to do search first but no luck. My Garmin 200W has just shipped out two days ago. Want to know different locations you guys put your aftermarket GPS. I know there is one you can buy to mount on the air vent.
Garmin Friction Mount.... makes it easy to hide when parked..... then no a holes breaking in to steal it from your glove box

I have a Nuvi 200, and I can tell you from experience to NOT ignore that little mounting disc that they also include in the box... That disc is a very small, low profile black disc that has some really sticky stuff on the backside of it. If you can find a good place to mount that sticky disk (the surface does not have to be totally smooth to mount it) then you are set. The suction cup mount that comes with the GPS will stick to that, and stay mounted very well. Right now, I own an F250 (trying to sell it myself before I buy my Tundra), and I have that little disc mounted right on the front of the dash beside the stereo. You can barely notice it at all. When I am using my GPS, the suction mount is stuck to that disc right on the front of my dash. When I am not in the truck, I take the suction cup mount off of the disc and hide everything else. Like I said, you can barely notice the little disc by itself, and it gives you a great smooth/ flat surface to mount the suction cup mount to. One thing to be aware of is to do some "trial runs" before you mount that sticky disc! Make sure that the final location will not put the suction cup mount anywhere where the GPS unit will block your view of the stereo, or any other things that you need to see or reach
I purchased a stick on round disk from ebay and stuck it on just above and to the right of the speedo where the dash overhangs above the cluster.(not on top of the dash but under the overhang) Sorry no pic but it works great and keeps the gps very close to the steering wheel for use.

Best money you can spend is for a remote antenna. Put it in the corner of the windshield and route the cable around the end of the dash by the passenger door, then under the glove box to the console area. I keep my Garmin 330 StreetPilot sitting in the front cupholder. The suction mount and bracket sits in the cup holder real well. GPS is off the top of the dash. Easy to reach, and there aren't wires strung everywhere. Still easy to move to another vehicle. I just unplug the remote antenna and leave it in the Tundra. Oh and fwiw. We have an Audi A6 with factory nav. The old Garmin is 10 times better. (and 10 times cheaper)
I have ran my antenna to the front most sun glasses holder in the overhead. it's a PITA but when i order a new mount for it (the original mount is in my company truck) it will look great and the screen will be in the shade of the roof and just above the rearview mirror.

You know what, this crosses my mind mounting the same way as you said. Unfortunately the GPS hasn't arrive yet, hopefuly today.

And for the rest of the tip you guys gave me will be tried to.
The suction cup mount that comes with your 200W mounts nicely above and to the right of the passenger-side temperature control dial. No sticky disc needed. Works great if you've got long arms!
I received my Nuvi yesterday and tried cpfan's idea but the suction doesn't hold as good. Second I tried at the left handside windshield and I liked it too, but it is not the best if you want your wife/gf/mistress to type in for you for sometime if you are busy driving and dont have time to stop. Third I tried KGinSC's idea and I think it is good too. But anyhow, I decided that if I am driving by myself for not known destination I will stick this on the left windshield driverside for I only use the suctions. And if she is with me I'll use KG's idea. If you guys have anymore idea's please do share here. I know there is one Tundra owner here uses the empty pocket right below the coin holder.

Thanks...
My idea allows you to move it anywhere you want within seconds.... and no suction cup residue circles dotting your windshield

I've looked at one of this friction mount and pretty reasonable for the price giving the convinience. This is an another option will consider to get and no attractions for breaking in and leaving no marks at the windshields or anywhere. Thanks
I mounted mine on the far left side of the dash using velcro on the bottom of the garmin mount. (The heavy duty stuff). Works great, you can remove the unit and also remove the mount and it is not as bulky as the friction mount. The suction cup on the garmin mount wears out after a while, especially if you mount it on the windshield.
I bought the beanbag holder from garmin .. it does not stay in place with spirited driving and/or off-roading so i cut the aluminum plate out of the beanbag holder, covered it with the black mat fabric from the beanbag holder, painted the edges flat black and mounted it through the plastic dash/speaker cover in front of the clock.
it was easy to route the cable from the plug up to the garmin

Use the plastic disk for a quick and easy mount that's removable if you want to change. I mounted my flat on the dash, under the radio, to the right of th aux plug. The good thing is the wife can navigate from the shotgun side.
