My wife has a Toyota OEM nav unit in her 2006 Sequoia Limited. I am not impressed with it other than the looks of it and the rear view camera display. However, if I am going to spend this much money on a Tundra, I'd like to get all the bells and whistles and the nav sure does look really, really nice! That being said, what are ya'lls experiences with it? Is it worth the money? I do have a Garmin so I would have nav functionality, just not the look of the in dash nav unit.If I am going to purchase a used Tundra, I am cutting into my opportunities severely with all of the options that I'm looking for (Limited, nav, 20" wheels, etc).I'm sorry for all the newbie questions, but this is a HUGE purchase and I need as much feedback as possible prior to purchase. Thanks guys!Matt
Like I said before I found most of what your looking for in 4x4 model tundra's as for the Nav it is not the best and it needs a overhaul most would use garmin like you stated above !
I also have the Toyota Nav, and a portable Magellan.
I agree with you that it's nice having the integrated unit, but I have to say that I would not buy it again. I would save the money and buy an aftermarket in dash unit.
The Toyota Nav is not very user friendly.

Anyone got pics of their aftermarket nav unit installed in the Tundra? My wife isn't going to let me put a stereo system in this truck, so I strictly want the aftermarket unit to blend with the dash and look stock (and hacked so that it can be used while driving unlike the stock unit). May also utilize the backup camera, bluetooth, sat radio of course, etc.
If anyone has pictures of their aftermarket nav unit, please post or email them to me. Thanks!
My tundra crewmax originally came with the regular 6 disc cd changer and the jbl system. The person who ordered the truck before me had a pioneer AVIC F-7010BT navigation system installed. Not only was it cheaper than the stock navigational unit, but I think it's a lot better in my opinion. There are pictures of it in my album. Hope this helps.
Wallygator, you got one nice and clean looking truck there! How much did it cost for the aftermarket navigation + install? Did you have to buy the dash fit kit too? Also does it play DVD's?

Thanks! The navigational unit costs around $500.00, I believe. I dont know how much it was to install since the dealership had it installed at a stereo shop that they do business with. My particular unit does not play DVD's, However, the other pioneer avic z series and F-90BT do have DVD playback capability. All of the steering wheel controls work except for the blue tooth buttons. The pioneer unit has its own blue tooth capabilty, and you just tell it to dial whatever phone number you have programmed into it and it dials it up for you. you can also have it switch back from nav, to sat radio, to ipod, to DS card, and cd player via voice command too.
Man that's not bad compared to paying $1,000+ for the factory navigation... Dang if I could just find a place to trust to do a clean perfect job... Most of the stereo shops here are run by people my age... I like how the LED's on your navigation are orange, would match my SR5 guage/ stereo lights perfectly. (not that I like the orange lights lol) Wish I had the optitron guages.

I have the Pioneer AVIC-D3 that came with the bluetooth unit. I also have the backup camera and ipod adapter. My unit sits great in the dash. Looks almost identical to the f-series he had. Mine ran 750 and I can watch DVD's while it is in motion. Plus the navigation and button colors can be changed whenever with a few buttons...
I have a Garmin 760 series portable unit and that is my reference point for functionality. Thus when shopping for a new minivan for my wife and a new truck for myself, I checked out the Navi in the Sienna and Tundra (same unit). I was not impressed with the response/performance and the functionality relative to my Garmin.
Ultimately we bought an Odyssey (with the Honda navi) and a Tundra without the Navi. I love my Garmin and I take it between my truck and my other car. My wife likes her Honda Navi because of the built-in rear view camera (nice to have but won't pay extra for it) and the large audio view. The GPS is marginal on the Honda but the unit performs better than the Toyota.
Why not go for a portable? The built-in or aftermarket is a bit cleaner and neater but for a few hundred bucks you can upgrade your portable every year (or 2 years) and be very happy.
Consumer Reports (KBB or some other media outlet) had done a study about a year ago where the resale on cars with Navi's was actually LOWER than those without. Turns out people don't want 4 year old technology in their 4 year old used car.

First off, I don't have an 08, so my take opinion for what its worth...
My dad is a broker and last week got someone an 07 Tundra double cab Limited with all the bells and whistles. It has the 20" wheels, nav, backup camera, heavy towing package, 5.7, 4x4, etc. I went and picked it up for his customer and drove it 600 miles home. The nav was extremely unuserfriendly (in my opinion), however, it does work and serve its purpose.
When it comes to used, you don't pay as much for all those fancy options. $25,000 for that truck was a decent deal, considering an SR-5 would have run about $22,000 with equal miles (mid 20s). It is worth the $3000 used to step up to leather, nav, and all that other fancy stuff. I think there is some kind of override for the speed sensor out there so it can be programed while you are moving.
I would say just buy the loaded truck now. Save yourself the agrivation and hassle of adding it later.
I've always had Pioneer products and I doubt I'll be buying anything from them for a long time. In my Tacoma that I just traded for my Tundra I installed the Avic-Z2, iPod adapter, XM radio, and the bluetooth module. After a few months I started getting a buzzing sound out of it, almost like files on the hdd were corrupt. per Avic411 I gave everything its own ground an power which was a PITA. Still, when you changed channels or played anything from the hdd it made this loud cracking noise. Put the stock unit back in for a month, no problem. Put the Avic back in, problem. Took it to the Pioneer repair center, they couldn't find anything wrong. Drove it over there when it was doing it, they couldn't find anything wrong even though the tech witnessed it in the truck. Wouldn't replace it. Won't buy another.
I did love the dual GPS screens but I'm done with Pioneer.
From My personal expeirence with the navigation systems in new models 07 and up have not been to good. Im a Toyota Technician at Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville and I honestly would not waste my money on them. More than likely you will be coming in to have it replaced under warranty because there is some kind of malfunction with which ever system you have installed from toyota.
Wow! Although subjective, I appreciate all the comments on in-dash nav. I guess the ring on my windshield is worth a grand or more. I, personally, would love the 7" screen, but there appears to be alot of negative input overall for the cost-vs.-satisfaction index; not to mention the depreciation on resale. ultimately it comes down to personal satisfaction with any given unit, be it OEM or aftermarket. Makes the decision that much more difficult...from a financial standpoint or personal.
