I have a few questions regarding the navigation DVD hack. First, is there a difference in 5.1 loading.kwi files between 4th and 5th generation navs ? Second, if there is a difference, how do you tell which loading.kwi file is which? Third, the 5th gen nav maintenance screens are different than the 4th gen screens. Is there any loss of functionality? For example, the 5th gen screens have Bluetooth settings and microphone tests. Do you lose those with the hack? Fourth, do all the other 5th gen nav screens still appear and fully function?
I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid using the loading.kwi file for on a 5.1 OS but have a fully functional 7.x mapping/functions system.
Yes, all functions remain. Bluetooth, mic volume, etc. The only difference I found was that I could access the hidden menu feature that is not available in 5th generation systems.
The only additional step with a Generation 4 system (i.e. 5.1 OS) is that you have to select the ACCEPT button everytime you start your vehicle. To me, that is a small price to pay for a fully functional system. Do be aware that full functionality to your dialer and other features are not available usless you go to your menu, volume screeen and activate the override. On short trips to the store I don't bother but on longer trips I do this. This can also be done while the vehicle is in motion.
I hope this answers all your questions but feel free to reply if you have other concerns.
I would like to know if the maintenance screens look and function like they do under the 5.1 version or if they look and function like the 7.1 version. I replaced my 4th gen nav with a 5th gen so I am familiar with the override function. In the 7.1 maintenance mode they are adjustments for Bluetooth volume and tests for the microphone and rear backup camera. Are those lost with this hack? And finally, was the 5.1 disc you used for a 4th gen nav or a 5th gen nav? Is there a difference?
EDIT:
If you have Gen 5 navigation, then:
you must use Gen 5 Map DVD to make any hacks
you will have all options available of 7.1 with 5.1 starting screen

Thanks for the info. One last question. Since I can't use my 4th gen 5.1 DVD I'll need a 5th gen 5.1 loading.kwi file. I found a link somewhere (I think in this forum) to download a loading.kwi file. However, I don't know if it is 4th or 5th gen. How do you tell? I assume file size might be a clue and, if so, what are the file sizes of the two?
I have a 2006 Sequoia with the factory NAV, and it came with a Gen 4 version 5.1 NAV DVD. I just purchased a Gen 4 version 7.1 but lost the override function. So if I create my own DVD, using all the files on the 7.1 DVD except use the loading.kwi file from the 5.1 DVD, then I will retain the override function?

I have no clue how to tell a difference between gen4 and gen5 loading.kwi files.

After you make new hybrid DVD you have to:
1. Eject Map DVD from your vehicle.
2. Disconnect battery for at least 5 minutes
3. Reconnect battery and insert hybrid DVD
4. Wait until your DVD will load.
5. Try out override option. (it should work)

You can create the hybrid disk & the override will work however some functions of the nav system will not not work like; address, points of interest, etc. are greyed out. I have not seen a work-around for a Gen4 system but would like to :-)

I am not sure what you are talking about, mine works fine, while I drive. All functions work with override.

I'm talking about a gen4 system not a Gen5? If you have info on a Gen4 hybrid I'm all ears. I have legit versions of 5.1 & 7.1 that I own, created a hybrid for fun but the POI & address button we're greyed out. YES! the override worked but not those functions.
Again I'm talking about a Gen4 system disks U20 & U22.

Gen 4's always have to select the 'I ACCEPT' button, even with a non-hybrid disc. I have a e7001 (2005 Solara) Nav that is a Gen 4, and even with the original (non-hybrid) v7.1 and v8.1 discs I always have to hit 'I ACCEPT', so I wouldn't characterize this as an additional step since you have to with hybrid or without.
The LOADING.KWI's are specific to the GEN of the NAV so a GEN 4 Nav unit requires a GEN 4 LOADING.KWI to use on the hybrid disc. Not sure of an easy way to tell the difference at a glance when downloading a LOADING.KWI except to look at the details of the file. I popped my original U20 v5.1 disc in and the properties for the LOADING.KWI were:
Date Created: 1/29/2005
Size: 49.8MB
Also, just remembered this. There is another way to get into the Diagnostic menu on the Toyota Navi's. You can't do it while in motion, so it wont help you there, but still cool.
How to put your navigation system into diag mode
1. Put your ignition key in "ACC" position
2. Turn your headlights to the OFF position if you have them on AUTO.
3. The Nav should display the Toyota banner and then wait at the disclaimer screen that prompts for English or French. While on this screen, press and hold down the "info" button on the Nav and at the same time flick your parking lights on then off three times. (headlight switch from off up ONE click only, then back to off 3 times, while the "info" button is held down).
Note: Audio and Nav will shut off during diagnostics. To revert everything back to normal, turn the ignition to off.
