This is a discussion thread titled "Solara Navigation install on 04 Tundra", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just completed a sucessful install of the Camry Navi system on my Tundra DC. I had the JBL amp so the install was quite easy. I do have one small problem which I need help on. After my install I noticed I was not getting the voice commands from the Navi. After returning to the OEMvalue web site I found that I need to install a amplified speaker to get my voice commands to work. Has anyone had experiance with this install, with some detailed instuctions?

You shouldn't have needed to do this. Mine simply mutes the radio and plays out through the driver's door speaker automatically. I didn't have to add anything. They say over in the Siennaclub group that the Sienna/Solara models have this requirement, but they also have separate navigation unit ecu units under the seats. Was yours the camry model? Also, have you connected the speed sensor wire - the audio mode will only activate once the speed wire is connected (as will the current road name display in the center of the screen and the turn by turn lists and such).
I rewired the speed wire and got the pop up menus like I should. But I still have no sound. I'm not sure if anyone has had any luck getting the voice output working on this unit, but if you do let me know. I know it's possiable to attach an ampified speaker to make this work, but it just seems like a cheap way of doing it. I really wanted the sound thru my existing sound system, especially the mute feature when music is playing. OEM doesn't have a fix, with the exception of adding the speaker.
I'm really disapointed with the voice guidance.

I know this is probably a given, but have you gone into the setup menu and made sure the voice option is turned on and the voice guidance volume is turned up? Both are found in the setup menus.
I have read a lot about the external speaker arrangement in the Siennas due to the way theirs is setup with the separate nav ecu computer under the seat, but both my Sequoia, which already had the amp, and the tundra which I had to put in the camry amp, both play through the system itself.
Yea that was the first thing I checked. This is an isolated problem with certain Toyotas and the preinstalled amp. This is a quote I took off the OEM web site.
"The Solara navigation unit uses an extra channel for voice navigation that is not recognized by the 2004 Tundra, 2003-2004 4Runner, and 2004 Sienna PREINSTALLED JBL amplifiers. In order to acquire voice navigation from this channel, you'll need to add an amplified speaker."
I'm not going to add a speaker. I'll just wait for someone to come up with something that will adapt to the preinstalled amp. Hopefully.

I have the 57005 Toyota DVD player. It works perfectly with the DVD. Just make sure you buy the Solara Navi. Keep in mind that you will not get voice instructions from the navi without installing a amplified speaker. I haven't installed the speaker. I think the 2005 Tundra is going to have a navi option, so maybe there will be a fix for the problem. Although it may require buying a new amp.
