This is a discussion thread titled "Navigation Issues-Speed Sensor Wire", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey folks...I have a new 04 DC Limited and I recently went through the excruciating pain of replacing the factory JBl system and putting in a new Kenwood DDX 7015 head unit, Kenwood sirius satellite radio and a Kenwood 4100 Navigation system. As many of you all know, to do this one has to totally re-wire the speakers and utilize crossovers in order to contiune to use the three-ways in the front doors. I LOVE this system overall. However, my issue is with the nav unit. Kenwood told my installer to tap into a green wire with an orange stripe in order to get accurate speed pulse's. However, the voice guidance that operates off this wire (not the satellites) does not work. I have spoken with Kenwood technical support numerous times and they suggested thatI had a bad unit. After two weeks of waiting, I received my new nav unit but I am still experiencing the same issues??? The triangle that represents the vehicle's location "floats" off track as well. Kenwood is as lost as I am??? Can somebody out there please help me??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ron

Hey there Ron,
That is the proper wire. I've installed a NAV unit that requires the speed sensor wire and I tapped into the Green/Orange Stripe wire behind the instrument cluster. How did the installer tap into this wire? Are you sure this wire is actually getting the voltage that it needs?

There's an information screen in the menu system that will show you the 'status' of the 'extra' wires you used (parking brake, instrumentation lighting dim setting, speed sensor) You can only get the screen if you are stopped (if you cheated on the parking sensor wire it would be available also, but I wired it correctly as I don't know the effect on the unit (perhaps confusion) if it wasn't done correctly). Once you get on the 'diagnostic' screen start driving and compare the displayed speed against you speedometer. If it's within a mph or two, you should have the connection right.
I think you aren't getting a clean sat signal. (see your 4100 post)
Kstorm...I have checked the diagnostic screen several times and I am within two miles an hour of my speedometer. As for the satellite issue, it states that I am getting reception from 7 or 8 satellites?? I did cheat and ground the green wire but Kenwood technical support said that shouldn't matter. It I disconnect the speed sensor wire, the unit tracks fine (no floating) but this wire is what provide the voice guidance system. I am totally confused and frustrated?? Thanks for the reply though, Ron
Testing that wire with a multimeter won't really work. The speed wire is a speed output, vs. an analog output like your sensors. An analog output will measure between 0 - 5vdc, a speed output is different. It sends pulses to your engine computer, sometimes thousands per second... If you get a MDS you can test it with that (use them on DMIs) but it is an obscure piece of equipment. If toyota told you that was the wire, then use this wire. If kenwood told you to use that wire, go to toyota and ask.
