GPS and Navigation AssistanceOEM Car, Aftermarket and handheld navigation discussions.
This is a discussion thread titled "DVD/NAV purchase.. need help..", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
You will not find the model # AVN30D on any Eclipse literature. It is only available through authorized dealers and is specifically marketed as an after-market replacement for Toyota and some similar GM setups.
OK - that makes sense. You and I are saying the same thing now (and you are helping me to reinforce my understanding).
So, if the AVN30D doesn't use the factory amp, then I'm still confused as to what the specific advantage is. Just that it has wiring pigtails designed to plug into the harness? You would still have to put some kind of wiring shunt at the amp to divert the signal from the HU to the speakers. Perhaps the AVN30D comes with this shunt as part of the package. This would make sense. My hypothesis is that the AVN30D is nothing more than an AVN5435 with different wiring harness... (perhaps that was what you were saying all along!)
All that being said, I finally decided to just buy a stock unit from oemvalue last night. I have the VSE (Bazooka) subwoofer installed, and it is tightly integrated into the JBL amp and wiring harness. Having to re-integrate the sub was more than I wanted to deal with right now...

Yes, we are saying the same thing. The big advantage of the AVN30D is that it does utilize the factory harnesses and incorporates the steering wheel controls as well, so no functionality is lost.
My advantage over the 5435 is that I was able to get the AVN30D very, very cheaply. I also considered the OEM value units (Solara NAV), but the price on the 30D was too good to pass up.
Hope our installs go well. Good luck!

I have an 05 Tundra DCab w/out the JBL system. I also don't have the steering wheel controls (but wish I did). What I want to know is, can I still put an Eclipse system in my truck. Also, is there any way to add the steering wheel controls? That would be the ultimate. Any help is appreciated!

Lastly, where do you buy an Eclipse system.
Do a little searching or ask. I know there are a few who have put the steering wheel controls on their trucks. I think the wiring is there, you just need the controls and the harness that comes with it. Salvage yard might be a good place to find one. Toyota part number is probably expen$ive.
You can put whatever audio system in your truck you want. It depends on how much work and money you want to spend. If you want NAV, then the easiest solution is probably oemvalue.com
They have the factory Toyota NAV systems and everything you need to install them. They are pretty much plug & Play.

Another different option you might want to consider is the Pioneer AVIC-D1 It is a double-DIN nav unit, and the specs are very impressive. If I wasn't trying to integrate with the factory system this is what I would use.
AS yo steering wheel controls, here's what you do:
Get the factory parts from a dealer, then use an aftermarket programmable steering wheel control integration kit. These take the signals from your factory steering wheel push buttons and convert them to an IR signal that the head unit picks up. There is a tiny LED that is the IR emitter, and it can be mounted in the top portion of the head unit bezel.
This approach is expensive (You'll probably spend $400 on parts between the factory controls and the programmable IR converter) but it will work just like the factory system (and its programmable so you can change the functions of the buttons to do whatever you want)
