Question DVD/NAV purchase.. need help..

I'm currently buying an 05 Tundra with the standard radio am/fm/cd (not JBL) and would like to get the Nav installed but the dealer is not sure if they can get it in before the build date. Are the factory NAV units aval for sale?? If so, who is selling them.. I saw a thread that you can buy from OEM but this guy is out of stock... Can this work without the JBL installed and are there others that sell the unit?? Thanks a million!!!

I was in your same situation and went ahead with the JBL 6-CD system with the intention of either adding an aftermarket (Eclipse) or just waiting for a unit from www.oemvalue.com I'm sure they will come back into stock eventually. You will also save a lot of money since the ones from oemvalue are $1,595

Do I need to get the JBL system?? Or can I just get the basic pkg radio, and then upgrade?? Also, have you heard that many people are happy with the oemvalue unit..? Thanks again...

The big advantage of getting the JBL system is that you get the component speaker enclosures, separate tweeters, JBL amp, steering wheel controls, and perhaps most importantly, the wiring harness that supports plug & play installation of all the other goodies like the VSE subwoofer and oem nav unit.

As to quality differences between the OEM unit and an aftermarket, the only thing I can tell you is that the oem will be a VERY simple installation, whereas an aftermarket will be more diificult and will require some level of customization. The downside of the OEM unit is that it does not play MP3 discs or DVDs but you can enhance the factory nav unit to support auxilliary inputs for both DVD and iPod (which is what I plan to do).

Check out This article on installing the unit

I just purchased an 2005 access cab limited. I told the dealer the only way I would buy it was if they gave me the DVD navigation. The navigation did not come with the vehicle and they just installed it today. The unit they installed is the Eclipse AVN30D. Its is a very nice unit that will play DVD and MP3. I also have the option to add sirus radio, HD radio, Remote, and a rear camera. The nice thing is that the AVN30D is a factory unit and it works with my radio controls on my Steering Wheel. The other nice thing is it sounds just as good if not better than the factory 6 disk changer that was in it. It only took them about 7 days to get it for me from the time I purchased the truck. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I can't seem to find any information on this unit, or where to buy it. Does it go by another name?

Thanks

The guy that did mine was a mobile install company that was hired by toyota his Company name is CTS Mobile Entertainment Systems and his name is Howard Tons phone number 661-775-3739. I am not sure if they do stuff outside the dealer but you can call them and ask. The model number of the Navi I have is only avaliable from dealer authorized people. Check with them for details. Hope this helps and let me know what happens. Thanks

I don't know what color the illumination is for the Tundra, but I have a factory NAV unit for sale. This Toyota NAV came from my 2005 4Runner. The leds are orange colored to match the instrument cluster in my 4Runner. My post in the classified section has more information. Let me know if you are interested. I am willing to negotiate on the price.

The AVN30D is the same unit as the AVN5435, thats what I was told except the AVN30D has the factory plugs for toyota and works with the controls on the streering wheel.

Cory, does your AC have the JBL system from the factory? (separate JBL amp). If so, did the AVN30D output a digital signal for the JBL amp?

Thanks

I am not sure because I did not install it. I do know that I have the 6 disk in dash changer and toyota had a mobile install guy install the navigation. The sound quality is almost as good as it was with the 6 disks. I do have to turn the volume up just a hair more than I did with the 6 disk. Hope this helps

Ah, it sounds like you did have the JBL, but your installer probably ran to the speakers directly from the output of the head unit (the 04-05 JBL amp is not compatible with aftermarket head units).

Yes, you do have to bypass the amp. I talked to Howard today because I picked up an AVN30D and he is sending me the parts and instructions on how to install it. He explained that the AVN30D is made specifically for the Toyota after-market. It will accept the Toyota harnesses directly. Steering wheel controls and all. The one catch is that the newer stock JBL amps are turned on by a signal from the stock head unit, and there is no way to remotely turn on the amp with an aftermarket head unit. You wont lose any power though because the AVN30D puts out more 4 channel power than the stock amp.

Howard said the AVN30D is essentially the AVN5435 without the pre-amp outputs. It does come with a 3 year warranty though!

Hmm, I'm not sure this is entirely correct. The stock head unit does not put out a "normal" (analog) speaker or line level output. It is a digital signal that must be interpreted by the JBL amp and then converted to an analog signal. This is why it is called a "data bus interface". (This is only true of the 04/05 tundra JBL systems, by the way)

the issue of turning it on may be related, but is a bit of a red herring (doesn't really apply). Unless the AVN30D is specifically made to output digital signals for the JBL amp to convert, then it is not a drop-in replacement for the Toyota head units. It would be interesting if you could find this out. If it is a direct replacement, I would jump on one in a heartbeat. But if it is, then it would also power the amp and make use of the JBL amp.

You misunderstand. You have to bypass the JBL amp. No other way around it. I've talked to installers who have put in the AVN5435 and similar Pioneer units and the only way they have to utilize the stock amp is to bury the stock head unit behind the dash. The stock head unit then becomes simply a very e
