GPS and Navigation AssistanceOEM Car, Aftermarket and handheld navigation discussions.
This is a discussion thread titled "Portable GPS for the car, any opinions?", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just got an Avalon, chose not to purchase the nav system. It's pretty bad. Instead I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 and a mounting clip from Proclip, mounts in the center air conditioner vent. This is working really well. Garmin's maps are solid and the touch screen is really easy to use. Another nice thing is that the Nuvi can fit in your pocket when you are hiking around a strange city.
Just an update on my earlier comments. Because of its portability, I prefer the 350/360 over the 660 series (widescreen). However, one of the benefits of the widescreen version was its built in traffic antenna (built into the charger cord). Garmin is now soon releasing a Nuvi 370 which maintains the size of the 350 but with bluetooth and a built in traffic antenna. I believe it will come out in late Feb., early March.

I'm a fan of Garmin. I have a 76 handheld, and a C330, i3, and an i2. I use one in each vehicle. No complaints on accuracy, used in So Cal, and on the East coast-100% correct. Customer service is outstanding. Magellan, and TomTom are both European owned_seems like that might give Garmin an edge on Americam mapping.
I have a Street Pilot 3 (GARMIN) for sale. Works really well and is a good unit to start with.. This is the delux model and portable.. I think GARMIN is the best one out there. Anyone interested??
