This is a discussion thread titled "Nav Issue", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I posted a thread yesterday in the AVALON section
Not sure I got a lot of responses so I am trying here since there are more people
so here was the message
hi
As I said in my previous thread, I just got a 2006 toyota avalon limited with nav.
I got the car after a car accident from an auction and we repaired it.
However I have a couple issues with the navigation system.
the car has been outside with the engine on for a while and with open sky and it still has not found any satelite (the time is not set and i do not see the gps sign by pressing enter)
Could someone tell me where is the GPS sensor and also if there is a fuse for it (may be it blew up after the crash)
Also, I tried to remove the dvd but no way, it does not want to go out.
I'll try to find a way to check the antenna.
However the system works ok using dead reckoning.
I've been driving and it indicates the position correctly.
Maps a working fine as well.

By NAV unit, I mean the Head Unit itself. Sounds like it works fine otherwise.
You said the vehicle was in an accident...........the NAV antenna wiring could have been severed or kinked, causing the lack of performance.

I think you have bigger problems than the antenna if you can't eject the DVD. Pulling the head unit will answer question about the antenna being attached or not. On the Tundra, it would take all of 10 minutes to do, on the Avalon not sure. Good luck!

maybe there isnt a dvd disc in the gps computer located in the trunk. sometimes towtruck drivers remove such parts which is worth 250.00 for an 06 nav dvd disc on the open market. ......as far as ejecting the dvd disc its a little tricky. . there is 2 layers to the eject button. first you slide the top button to the left which opens the dvd opening. then you push the bottom button which is seen after sliding the top button over to the left. you then hold the bottom button in for several seconds and then the dvd comes out. if you hear the mechanism making an eject noise then probably no dvd. if it makes no noise when you hold in the eject button then the unit may not be powered up.
First:
I was finally able to get the DVD.
Like someone said in another thread (Avalon section), the car has to be on, or better say the nav system on, and then I can eject the DVD.
The DVD is the version 5.1.
Second.
By removing the glove compartment I was able to "kinda" check the gps antenna. Wires seemed fine, not cut or anything.
The car was in a smalll accident, just the left front was damaged. The dashboard was fine.
So after making sure the antenna was plugged correctly I tried again.
No luck, still no satellite reception.
Everything seems to be fine since dead reckoning nav works perfectly.
I am not sure what to look for now.
Are there any relays I should check?
While pressing and holding the "INFO" switch, operate the light control switch: OFF " ON " OFF " ON " OFF " ON " OFF.
The diagnostic mode starts and the "Service Check Mode" screen will be displayed. Service inspection starts automatically and the result will be displayed.
I did this and in the navigation part a DTC error code show up.
I am trying to find it but I have no chance so far.

Ok
Now it can't get worse.
I received the new antenna from the dealer.
I tried it quickly inside the car (I removed the glove compartment and unswitched the old one), with the antenna as close as possible to the door (it was almost outside).
Results: nothing was working. No satellite reception. (I used the system check)
Dang.....
I decided to go directly at the source. I removed the navigation ECU and plugged the antenna directly there. Ran a quick system check and ohhhhhhh finally, it worked.
So I guess the issue is the wirring. Dannnnngggg.
So I downloaded as many files as I though would be usefull from the TOYOTA TIS web site (i paid for a one day subscription $10).
Results, there is a bunch of explanation regarding all the wirring to the navigation ECU except the one for the antenna. I think I am doomed.
Anyway,
Does anyone have a complete wirring diagram to find out were exactly this cable is going to and which junction connectors it is using.
I looked everywhere and could not get the information I needed.
Here are some PDF's. I dont know if you have these or not. The antenna for the GPS is very complicated. It goes thru the head unit and is then divided into other wires as it heads to other ECU's
The best thing to do is buy a EWD (electrical wire diagram) from Toyota.
All the wire routing and connectors will be at your finger tips.
