Default Avic-z1 installed....god I love it!

04 tundra dc

Well I broke down and had my z1 installed today. I was looking forward to the challenge myself, but found out they thought they had to bury the stock jbl head unit in my dash or under the seat to get the amp to turn on. But it turns out for some reason my truck has the jbl amp. behind the seats like the jbl sythesis pkg. but on my head unit it doesent say synthesis??? So they had to run a bunch of extra wires back to the amp and stuff. So now I'm wondering if I have the jbl synthesis pkg. but the original head unit was damaged somehow and the dealership replaced it with the regular jbl head unit. Would there be an easy way of checking this? Is there a number on the amp or would the amp say synthesis on it? But anyways its finally in and working. Wow what a sweet head unit I am still working on figuring the thing out and probably will be for days to come. I will try to get a good picture of it up here in the next day or two. I am also wondering what others have done to fill the gaps on either side of it. My installer just used electrical tape on either side of the panel that pioneer gives you to fill the gaps, he said that eclipse gives you three different ones to use but pioneer only one. So it looks good I just might have to modify it a lil to meet my needs.

I'm seriously looking at this unit as well for my 2006 tundra DC. My only question is how about the steering wheel controls for my current jbl radio. Will they still work?

The Jbl amp will not be used on this system your going to have to bypass that amp from your Shop The Pioneer Z1 has plenty of power on the unit to supply power to all the factory speakers and has More power vs stock. To your question on steering wheel controls yes you can tie them into the system too however I will admit adding the Pioneer steering wheel controls that attaches to the wheel is better because it has bluetooth controls if you plan on getting the blue tooth unit like i have on my Z1....

I'm probably going to pull the trigger on the Z1 in the next week or so. I definitely want to get the bluetooth module, and am considering the pioneer steering wheel control. Anybody have any pics of either the Z1 and/or the steering wheel control unit installed in their Tundra?

All of the things you could spend a week's take home pay on, is the AVIC Z1 really worth it?

Is the Z1 really worth 2x as much as the D2?

I'd really like to upgrade the stereo in my '06 SR5 and the idea of a Nav system is also quite intriging, as is an in-car video entertainment system, and the tie-in with a back-up camera, but I'm struggling with the cost/benefit of the Z1....

yes Cost wise I think the unit will pay for itself in my opinion. Gas wise Im allready saving because I dont get lossed in this metro Traffic and the Unit is very handy on other application like Bluetooth and Not carrying Cd's in the Tundra. Your paying for more then just a navigation unit the unit Hdd hard drive is pretty high tech and play Dvd's and runs navi at the same time the system does Mulit Task very ,very well. I noticed your in the Atlanta area and if you like to see a Pioneer install Up close on a tundra your welcome to see My unit in action. The D2 is an ok Unit but doesnt have the Hdd Harddrive and the Unit uses dvd rom drive Mapping sofe ware Unlike the Z1 which has a HDD Based hard drive system.

Thanks... My consternation is purely economic / cost benefit. If I used the truck on a daily basis for business and needed to find clients, no question that the Z1 would be worthwhile. However, as a weekend driver for errands and road trips, the Z1 might be a bit extravagant. I've got my Blackberry but 80% of my use is Email, my laptop can play DVDs as well as solitare for the wifey on roadtrips, and I'm almost tempted to go with a smaller hand held Navigation device that I can move from car-to-car-to-motorcycle-to-bicycle. Decisions, decisions...

As to your offer, based on the photo of your AVIC Z1 in Navigation Mode, I think we may live in the same neck of the woods: home is near the intersection of Acworth Due West & Stilesboro Rd....

Hello,

I am thinking about getting an Avic for a Camry 2007 (hybrid). Does anyone have a photo of one installed in a Camry? I would really like to see if it protrudes out or if it is flush.

Thanks

Shawn

I love the Z1 we installed in our Sequoia EXCEPT:
1) There is no way to move quickly through the song/artist list in the ipod directory and
2) I have not installed the bypass yet, so the system will not allow me to make destination/programming changes at the stop-light unless I put the vehicle in park and engage the emergency brake. It's a total pain in the ***. (But the bypass IS available.)
3) The Bluetooth disengages if I turn the vehicle off for a moment. (Maybe this is a phone problem, as I switched phones and I have not been driving my other blue-tooth vehicle since then (waiting for good weather).

I've had the Pioneer steering wheel controls in two prior vehicles. It works okay, but it looks cheese-whiz. It's MUCH better to get the Pioneer interface for the factory steering wheel controls. That's what we did with the Sequoia installation and it works at least as well as the Pioneer strap-on device.

Update: Eric pointed me to the right source for info on the Z1. The disable feature is easy to bypass, so now I'm up and running with all the features working properly.

I would still opt to use the factory audio wheel controls.
