That review is crap. There's one in every crowd that expects the machine to tell you wether the local gas station uses Charmin or Quilted Northern in the bathroom stalls.
You can pull up POI's by category - like Mexican Restaurants to show the POI's on your map screen. You can then bring up a list of the Local POI's and it will list them by name (like Raul's Mexican Restaurant) It will give you the straight-line distance from your point and even a little arrow that shows you the general direction you need to travel. You just touch the listed local POI and it will guide you there. You can also display a list of POI's along a set route if a destination has been set. By the way, I'm looking at my owner's manual right now to describe all these functions. Apparently, that reviewer didn't read his!
Keep in mind that any NAV unit is only as good as the most recent maps and POI lists, whether they are DVD based or hard drive based.
It takes a lot of time/effort/expense to compile and update those maps and the most recent maps from any manufacturer will most likely be at least a year old, if not more.
The most recent Eclipse maps are dated December 2004 and were released earlier this year.
The Eclipse (Pioneer too) units are solid performers. I have an Eclipse AVN unit and love it. I have done a lot of research lately and I do know a fair bit about the Eclipse units specifically.
Don't take that reviewer's word only - don't take my word only, but look collectively at all the reviews anywhere you can find them and base your decision that way.
