Default Factory Navi w/ rear entertainment dealer option

so i bought a used 2004 4Runner a week ago. I love it. Its the limited so it has every option. a beautiful ride. i want to integrate a video source into my factory nav, ie. hacked xbox, a mini-itx pc, ipod, or zune. more than likely im going to hack an xbox and put it in to replace the dvd player, since its a peice of **** anyway. it wont play a pristine disc, let alone dvd's my kids have polished up for me. im good w/ computers, but i think a hacked xbox running mediacar would be pretty awesome. especially if i can integrate OBDII. i'll wifi adapter it so i can park in my driveway and throw m3dia files from my desktop into my xbox. voila, no more toting and scratching dvds, and crawling under the seat to switch em up. <<< granted its my dream, but i know its very doable >>>

this is my hang up, i'm not sure how to get a video source into the factory nav. i'm not going to waste my time w/ it unless i can get a video source tied into the factory nav while im driving. ideally id like some touch screen interface action for my media files, but i might have to see what is available application-wise for the xbox. im not a programmer. i'll be content w/ a IR remote interface when im not using the factory nav.

the dealership service folks told me my nav was gen 2 or 3, but he wasnt sure.. he'd guess 2. i got the # 17010 written in the bottom right of the head units molding, and toyota voice navigation written across the top of it. i got into the service menu via the nifty invisible buttons and its a denso dvd navi unit. if someone wants the #'s i can provide them, i dont have them handy.

i subscribed to this website so i could download the owners manual and the navigation manual. both manuals left me with more questions than answers.

i know about lock pick, and i read up on his website. his e-mail is down, i assume because of his new baby girl he posted about on his website.

does anyone here know of any person in competition of his custom work? i read somewhere oemvalue has some things available, but they don't respond to email and i dont see a product suiting my needs posted on his site.

How do i determine which generation navi unit i have?

what version denso dvd navigation disc's are compatible w/ the generation of navi unit i have? i want to get the most updated software that lock-pick can hack and will still be compatible w/ my navi. (which is maybe gen2 or 3 lol) i don't wanna purchase the wrong one on ebay...

which lock pick package do i need, and associated custom fabricated wiring for aux inputs... my older nav unit only has the single source input for the dvd nav in the back... i can only assume, lock pick has some fancy dongle to mux the aux and navi signals

aux audio inputs via a wired source are a must, since all my media, including mp3's are going to be stored on a hdd. i'd really dont want to degrade my audio quality via a fm transmitter, and i might want to add another aftermarket amp someday... i definately dont want to amplify an fm transmitter signal.

im good w/ an oscope and a soldering iron if someone can point me in the right direction to do it myself thatd be even better? i just need to have all my components and resources lined out before i go tearing the dash apart. something tells me ill catch hell from my wife if my wifes new truck is torn to peices cuz it wasnt good enough for me, for more than say 2-3 days lol

does anyone know of a warez portal providing torrents for toyota/lexus nav dvd's? $250 is a tad freakin ridiculous for technology that is about 2shakes from the grave... i guess there is always ebay.

does anyone have personal experience/success stories of a video source integration via the lock pick kit into factory nav? particularly i'd like to here about 1 & 2 gen factory navi systems. be it a vga source or analog source, complications along the way, resulting video signal quality of your endeavors -the whole 9yards...

i've read up on mp3car.com and it seems the input for the nav's head unit receives is a 15khz rgb signal w/ standard vga resolutions ie 640x480 from the denso dvd player, but no1 can seem to figure it out lol. any knowledge about what type of source my head unit feeds on would be greatly appreciated. once i start tearing out components ima get an o-scope on it and ill find out more.

i can see it now, ima tear this car apart, ima get frustrated trying to source the head unit w/ vga, ima huck all of it in the garbage, ima go out and build a pc and do it like toyota should have in the first place. then ima have fun trying to get the toyota gps sensors to interface w/ mediacar. >< all the new gen nav systems use harddrives. i guess the dvd nav is functional, but i just want more media. if i can maintain the functionality of my factory navi and integrate a media solution ill be a happy kind of guy. i know its illegal for the driver to be able to see motion video while driving, but i also know if my wife wants to play super mario brothers w/ my boys that are in the back seat ima damned well make it happen for them. on second thought, ill make her drive.

anyhow, sorry for the sloppy post. any help greatly appreciated. i'm really not asking to be spoon fed, i'm just fed up looking for information that just isn't available. i know how to do a freakin boolean text search on google. I guess ill make phone calls to dealerships tomorrow. knowledgable dealerships w/ service departments whom have at least a little technical expertise w/ any luck...

feel free to hijack my post w/ your tales of woe, or you could start your own thread kthx... /stab troll

i mainly retrofit 2 piece oem prius and lexus navigation so i am more of an expert on your 2 piece toyota 4runner navigation than all the 1 piece toyota experts on this forum. your 17010 is pre govemnent regulation of the video input to the headunit so you have a live ntsc video port on the 6 pin dvd player input on theback of the unit. . all you have to do is ground the parking brake connection and swich the speed sensor and the movies will play for the passenger while moving. also the overide screen from the service menu can be brought up if you dont want to ground the parking brake. go to menu then vlume and tap on the volume screen left top bottom the right bottom to getr overide screen.

the dvd map is genration 2/3 that you need. the 6.1 86271-33035 is the latest although the dealer goes by different numbers so also has no idea what your taking about if you go by numbers on the actual disc. all very confusing for a reason. there are generation 4 6.1 and genration 5 6.1 discs so dont confuse them.

you dont need any lockpics. yours is all unlocked prior to 2005 govet regs against watching movies on the front sceen. also all the lock pics mess with the 10 pin rgb cable and that messes with navigation screen quality so best is go though the 6 pin video and sound y connected to the 12 pin cd changer port.

lastly the technological advantage of your 2 piece system is that all lexus continue to have 2 piece system computers which keep getting better and better presently on on genration 5 so as time goes on you can upgrade the whole computer not just the disc like the 1 piece toyota units are stuck on. their generation the generation 6 computers are going back to harddrive like generation 1 but this time the genration 6 computers are going to have 2 harddrives . 1 for gps and one for huge media stoarage. and guess what? only your 2 piece system have the capability to upgade to the new technology. so chear up . you have a very high end system whose parts listed for $1500.00 when new and which is upgradable to the very latest technology in the future unlike the 1 piece toyota nav units except prius and highlander which still have 2 piece systems. avalon is 2 piece but joystick so not compatible with 4th and 5th and coming 6th generation computers which are all touchscreen.

there are 2 "secret menus" associated w/ most factory toyota nav systems. there are invisible on-screen buttons you can hit in sequence to access these menus, but there is a simpler way. hold down info and turn on/off your headlights 4x. a menu will appear with some general trouble-shooting tools. feel free to poke around. while in this first menu, repeat the same steps as you used to enter into the first menu to enter a much more dangerous menu. in this menu is the option to override the the inability to configure your nav, and video while travelling. i would highly suggest not touching anything other than that one button. there are several buttons within this menu that will make your nav completely unusable, even a few that will flash your NAV units ECU effectively destroying it. to leave either menu hold down the display button for 4-5seconds. your head unit will reboot.
for whatever reason on my generation 3 hardware running v3.1 software i am unable to access the override screen neither by headlight or on screen button pressing sequence.

My Opinion on Toyota Navi Unit's are they flat out sucks on feature's and your better off getting Aftermarket like the Pioneer Z1 with Hdd harddrive based system like i have. Lexus New Ls460 has the Hdd system with Xm traf Navi and I figure Toyota would be adding this in the near future. The Avalon Navi system is also a Low Budged system in My opinion and feature wise I don't care for that either.

The Avalon Nav, I agree is a Toyota Blunder, especially for it being their Flagship sedan. It's a mess and not user friendly at all.

But, the two piece Nav's offer full touchscreen control of A/C and Trip info. That's why Lexus continues with this Luxury feature set in the Two piece design of their current Nav offerings.

I am not pro or con aftermarket stuff here, I just feel they are apple and oranges apart in many different aspects.
