so i bought a used 2004 4Runner a week ago. I love it. Its the limited so it has every option. a beautiful ride. i want to integrate a video source into my factory nav, ie. hacked xbox, a mini-itx pc, ipod, or zune. more than likely im going to hack an xbox and put it in to replace the dvd player, since its a peice of **** anyway. it wont play a pristine disc, let alone dvd's my kids have polished up for me. im good w/ computers, but i think a hacked xbox running mediacar would be pretty awesome. especially if i can integrate OBDII. i'll wifi adapter it so i can park in my driveway and throw m3dia files from my desktop into my xbox. voila, no more toting and scratching dvds, and crawling under the seat to switch em up. <<< granted its my dream, but i know its very doable >>>
this is my hang up, i'm not sure how to get a video source into the factory nav. i'm not going to waste my time w/ it unless i can get a video source tied into the factory nav while im driving. ideally id like some touch screen interface action for my media files, but i might have to see what is available application-wise for the xbox. im not a programmer. i'll be content w/ a IR remote interface when im not using the factory nav.
the dealership service folks told me my nav was gen 2 or 3, but he wasnt sure.. he'd guess 2. i got the # 17010 written in the bottom right of the head units molding, and toyota voice navigation written across the top of it. i got into the service menu via the nifty invisible buttons and its a denso dvd navi unit. if someone wants the #'s i can provide them, i dont have them handy.
i subscribed to this website so i could download the owners manual and the navigation manual. both manuals left me with more questions than answers.
i know about lock pick, and i read up on his website. his e-mail is down, i assume because of his new baby girl he posted about on his website.
does anyone here know of any person in competition of his custom work? i read somewhere oemvalue has some things available, but they don't respond to email and i dont see a product suiting my needs posted on his site.
How do i determine which generation navi unit i have?
what version denso dvd navigation disc's are compatible w/ the generation of navi unit i have? i want to get the most updated software that lock-pick can hack and will still be compatible w/ my navi. (which is maybe gen2 or 3 lol) i don't wanna purchase the wrong one on
ebay...
which lock pick package do i need, and associated custom fabricated wiring for aux inputs... my older nav unit only has the single source input for the dvd nav in the back... i can only assume, lock pick has some fancy dongle to mux the aux and navi signals
aux audio inputs via a wired source are a must, since all my media, including mp3's are going to be stored on a hdd. i'd really dont want to degrade my audio quality via a fm transmitter, and i might want to add another aftermarket amp someday... i definately dont want to amplify an fm transmitter signal.
im good w/ an oscope and a soldering iron if someone can point me in the right direction to do it myself thatd be even better? i just need to have all my components and resources lined out before i go tearing the dash apart. something tells me ill catch hell from my wife if my wifes new truck is torn to peices cuz it wasnt good enough for me, for more than say 2-3 days lol
does anyone know of a warez portal providing torrents for toyota/lexus nav dvd's? $250 is a tad freakin ridiculous for technology that is about 2shakes from the grave... i guess there is always
ebay.
does anyone have personal experience/success stories of a video source integration via the lock pick kit into factory nav? particularly i'd like to here about 1 & 2 gen factory navi systems. be it a vga source or analog source, complications along the way, resulting video signal quality of your endeavors -the whole 9yards...
i've read up on mp3car.com and it seems the input for the nav's head unit receives is a 15khz rgb signal w/ standard vga resolutions ie 640x480 from the denso dvd player, but no1 can seem to figure it out lol. any knowledge about what type of source my head unit feeds on would be greatly appreciated. once i start tearing out components ima get an o-scope on it and ill find out more.
i can see it now, ima tear this car apart, ima get frustrated trying to source the head unit w/ vga, ima huck all of it in the garbage, ima go out and build a pc and do it like toyota should have in the first place. then ima have fun trying to get the toyota gps sensors to interface w/ mediacar. >< all the new gen nav systems use harddrives. i guess the dvd nav is functional, but i just want more media. if i can maintain the functionality of my factory navi and integrate a media solution ill be a happy kind of guy. i know its illegal for the driver to be able to see motion video while driving, but i also know if my wife wants to play super mario brothers w/ my boys that are in the back seat ima damned well make it happen for them. on second thought, ill make her drive.
anyhow, sorry for the sloppy post. any help greatly appreciated. i'm really not asking to be spoon fed, i'm just fed up looking for information that just isn't available. i know how to do a freakin boolean text search on google. I guess ill make phone calls to dealerships tomorrow. knowledgable dealerships w/ service departments whom have at least a little technical expertise w/ any luck...
feel free to hijack my post w/ your tales of woe, or you could start your own thread kthx... /stab troll
