This is a discussion thread titled "GPS reccomendation please", within the GPS and Navigation Assistance forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm looking for a GPS unit for my truck that I can use as a streetmap and for Geocashing. What I want is to;
-- Punch and address into the unit and it will help me get there
-- punch a latitude and longitude into the unit and it will tell me which direction and how far
-- Ideally i could punch a lat/long position into it and I could tell me what streets to take to get close.
-- Once I've gotten where I want to go it could help me get back to where I started
-- I'd like to be able to unplug it for hiking/using in a different vehicle
I occasionally need help finding an address in the Greater S.F Bay Area but the family and I like to go exploring logging roads and trails on the Mendocino Coast, in the Sierras, and the Nevada deserts. I'm looking for a bit of a saftey net for remote locations, and many points of interest are found by lat/long sites not by street address.
If anyone has a good reccomendation I'd sure like to hear it.
Garmin 76cs-plus, that is what I have and it is great. The only bad thing is you have to download city maps. But as far as hiking and offroading go it is one of the best for portibility, plus it floats in water & you can submerge it in water.
Hey Big Dave,
I have been using the Garmin GPS 60cs both in and out of my cars. I am a geocacher as well and it works great in both situations. A couple of options that are worth looking at are the external antenna for the car and the power adapter. The newer version of the 60 has a micro chip in it to hold more maps but unless you are travelling a great distance you probably wont use much of the cards memory. Good luck and happy geocaching!!!
I am a Geocacher as well and would recomend the 60csx you can hook a antenna on it as well if you really need it. That unit has very good reviews.
I am still using a older etrex vista serial port model. I can do most everything I want with it.
Have you checked the forum at Geocaching.com? Groundspeak Forums
Theres a ton of info there if you have not been there yet.
I have both a Motorola 560 and 580 phone that helps pin point location. The 580 has the capability to do most things a palm can do.
I also utilize google earth and download caches into the puter and can print the area they are in as well.
