Proposed Group Buy: Sos Disc Brake Conversion For The '00 To '06 Tundra
Hi everyone.
Tired of that dreaded brake pulsing? Want to beef up your brakes and get more stopping power? Good news:
Tom at SOS (TundraRacing.com) has agreed to offer Tundra Solutions Subscribers/Members special pricing on their disc brake conversion kit for the 2000 to 2006 Tundra.
The basic kit includes everything needed for the install (other than brake fluid) AND includes the parking brake kit. The Rear disc brake kit is a direct bolt on replacement for the stock Toyota drum brake system. No special tools are needed for the install.
The Complete Basic Kit for the 2000 to 2006 Tundra is regularly $999, but would be $800delivered for TS Subscribers, and $850delivered for TS Registered Members. SOS also offers optional powder coating of the calipers for $120. We can only get this special group pricing if we can get eight members committed to the GB. PLEASE participate in the poll only if you are definitely “in” or “out” as we will be counting on these numbers to proceed with the Group Buy. Feel free to PM or post any questions.
Thanks,
Ken

This is a great idea in my opinion and long overdue. My only hesitation is that I know that some of the aftermarket brake kits are configured so that a stock wheel no longer will fit which means an additional couple thousand dollars for new wheels. Is there any way to verify that the stock Toyota wheels will still fit? Thanks for all of your work on this group buy.
Gary

Re: Proposed Group Buy: Sos Disc Brake Conversion For The '00 To '06 Tundra
Hi Gary. Good point, I was concerned about this myself (I have 16" Centerline wheels).
Tom at TundraRacing.com says that the calipers fit with all of the 16" wheels, but that the 15" wheels are "hit or miss". TS member dogger has installed the SOS conversion, and confirmed that it does clear the stock 16" wheels.
Hope this answers your questions. Feel free to email or post with any other concerns.

I would SOOOOOO be down for this, but this post is a day late and a dollar short, spent it on a set of coilovers and rear springs. Good price for a good kit though. D@MN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crap!!! That was going to be my excuse not to buy these.
Any idea how much the install would run?
I don't have a lot of $$$ and I'm going to need new tires soon.

It is a "bolt on" conversion. Really the only specialty tool (if you want to call it that) is a grinder/cut-off tool for removing the old backing plate. You also need to bleed the brakes thoroughly after install.
I will see if I can get a copy of the install instructions from Tom. They have some posted on the site for the Pro Series Conversion, but the installation is different (easier) for the Standard Kit.

I guess I should have been more specific. How much will it cost a somewhat mechanically challenged person, who only owns a drill, socket set, some screw drivers, and garden tools, to have the brakes installed?
Wait, I forgot I have a saw and two, yes two, hammers.

OH man, that was an EXCELLENT clarification!
I am guessing that it would be a 2 to 3 hour job at whatever the going rate it.
What I would do is just shop it around. I went to several different muffler shops when I wanted to get my Y pipe installed, and eventually found a compassionate soul that offered to do it for $50. My guess is that if you do the same (wander from shop to shop with your pockets out, hat in hand) and someone will give you a deal. There was another member on this board that did the same thin and got his JBA headers installed for $100!!!!
Anyway, I would bet you could get them installed at a reasonable rate (with the right aproach).
