Default TRD Sway Bar Powder Coating Warning!

Just finished installing my TRD rear sway bar, easy installation and the ride is indeed improved. However, I want to provide a warning for those of us that can not stand the red color and have the bar powder coated satin black as I did.

I used a very experienced and well respected Powder Coating company that I have used in the past to have the bar, end links and mounting hardware done over the weekend. Came in Monday to pick it up and guess what, they failed to remove the (urethane?) bushings from the end links and melted them during the oven cure. The owner was not working the weekend and apparently the person doing the work just blew it.

So, okay need to get new bushings for the tie rods, seems simple enough...not! Toyota had no part numbers for parts on the kit, so I called TRD themselves, talked to a guy in the know and we discovered there are no separate parts that can be ordered, only thing to do was order a entire new kit. The owner of the Powder Coating company said his error, he would pay for it, so I ordered a replacement. When it came in, we took the bushings off the tie rods and I was set to go. Guess he will use the remaining hardware as a sample as he was going to powder coat it he said.

So, if you go this route, take the bushings out of the tie rods (use a press) and keep the sway bar bushings out as well, don't rely on others to remember not to bake parts that melt! If you have the nylock nuts done, expect them to be ruined, so take them out as well.

Very happy that I did the Powder Coating, cost was $100 and the look is great.

Good idea that red is very tacky. Toyota should offer it in black, only way I would buy one.

Yup this red paint stands up like a sore thumb. And then I ordered Rancho adjustable shocks and the boots they came with are also red! I'm just gonna buy some Krylon and spray paint the sway bar and the shock boots.

On my 2000 I bought the anti-sway made by helwig (sp) I think I saw one on ebay for the 07. The aftermarkets are black already. Also on the 2000, I did not listen to the directions and go back after a few days, then months and snug it up. As a result I lost one of the ends and bushings. I just went to the auto parts and bought new ends for $20. So the bad bar still has value if the guy wants to sell it to the dude asking to buy it.

Here is mine. Powdercoated black.

Yes, I pressed all the poly bushings out before taking it to the shop. Very happy with the results.

I'm going to call Addco on Monday and see when they will have a bar available. Good tips on the TRD bar.

No, I do not believe he wants to sell it, he said he was going to Powder Coat it and use it as an example at shows and such.

BIG difference in the TRD and Helwig bars, do some searching on this forum and Googling on the subject. Also I am sure an end link from an auto parts store in place of the TRD link and bushings would effect the overall geometry of the sway bar, I would not recommend it.

I like the red colored sway bar! I have a silver sky DC, and the red sway bar, and the red tail lights are good accents IMHO. It makes it look modded.

What does it weigh, roughy? I installed a Helwig on my 2000 model and I recall it was at least 20lbs.

I did not weigh mine, if I was to guess, probably closer to 35 or 40 lbs. It is really stout.
