Smile finally installed my Hellwig

puchased in Feb, got truck in March - was waiting for a neighbor with
time & his torque wrench

took less than 1 1/2 hours - after laying out all the parts

recommend trying all nuts before install - some were very tight

thanks to tremo's photos - they were a help - as was the use of the colour office printer

have only had a short test drive - looking for curves - a very noticable difference - thanks to TS & all who recommended this mod

I ordered the sway bar and tried installing it over the weekend. However, the spacers were missing so I'm waiting on those to be shipped. I was also short 2 of the larger washers.

Some of the nuts were very tight. On inspection, the threads were poorly fabricated. I may run by a hardware store and see if I can get some higher quality nuts.

Those tight nuts were probably self-locking nuts. They're made slightly out of round. Did they have some small markings on the sides or one end?

Default Hellwig problem :-)

- same one I have with the '82 Yamaha Seca - not enough corners
where I live

took the Tundra for a good spin - corners like the Civic SI I used to have

very nice

Default I just ordered the Hellwig Anti-sway bar!

I was convinced into buying it because it seems everyone here who owns one gave it rave reviews! I went ahead and placed my order with Nancy from Hellwig and got the red one!

She will ship it out today and I should receive it via UPS. She's going call me back for the total amount. Can't wait to drive my Tundra and feel the difference in handling as everyone has noted.

This forum ROCKS!

Don't get too excited. I was the second to order and the first to order a red one. Nancy got a little mixed up and I ended up getting mine last (until you that is). She still hasn't shipped my black one. (I need two )

On the brighter side, I held my tongue just right and it only took 45 minutes to install from the time I opened the box until I took it for a test drive. I guess I got lucky or am exceptionally talented in mechanics.

Actually I think that I will be the last one to receive mine, I still need to call Hellwig because I think my red bar is in a waterlogged box right now in the New Orleans UPS terminal. Before Katrina hit I should have gotten the bar on that Monday or Tuesday......but that didnt happen so I am still waiting.

I placed my Hellwig order on Tuesday and received it today! I guess it's because they are also in California. The order volume may have dropped a tad since the group buy so they got my order up and running; also the part was in stock. However, I won't be installing it until the weekend so I'm holding my breath; hopefully I have all the correct parts included.

Now, the red bar's finish is a bit bumpy but shiny, is that how yours came? I heard all the complaints about the finish on the black bar. The little box with all the small parts was hot glued to the box; it was like someone glueing a quarter on the sidewalk and then watching people try to pick it up, that's what happened to me. Doh! Weighed the bar and it came out to 18.5lbs.

Other than that I can't wait to get this installed right and do my first test drive.

Yes, mine was a bit bumpy but I didn't think it looked bad. Once it's on your truck, you sure won't notice.

Default Awesome

Finally got my red bar installed and I am amazed at the improvement in cornering and handling. It is almost scary because I am curious about the limits and am pushing them more then I should. It will be interesting to see how it improves the handling in snow and ice with both wheels on the ground. I waxed my bar before I put it on and it shines and looks great under the truck.

Just curious as to how long it took you to install. I can't wait anymore . Did you have to lift the truck on jack stands or were you able to scoot right under it. Was it a pretty straight forward install? Anything you'd do differently if you had to install it again? Thanks!

Sorry for jumping in. I did my install 2 weeks ago and as advertised there were 2 tough spots. The first was there wasn't enough threads showing on the long screw to get the nut started. I ended up grinding off 1/8" or so of the long spacer. I really don't see what that could hurt. The other is keeping the plate with the stud on it from spinning on the driver's side when using the deformed thread locknut. It would be easy if you substituted a regular nut and lockwasher there. I was determined to do it with the locknut so the whole job took me almost 2 hours. There's no need to lift the truck but you ought to put some boxes under the vehicle to support the bar while you're positioning it.
Let us know how the install goes for you.
Tom
