Handling ImprovementsTechnical discussions regarding sport suspensions, performance sway bars, shock absorbers, lowering kits and handling improvement systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Hellwig sway bar", within the Handling Improvements forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hellwig sway bar is definitely worth the $! I got it for @ $178 w/shipping from JC Whitney and it arrived in 3 days. I got installed in 1 hr. 10 min. including putting tools away. My first drive around the block had me grinning from ear to ear. To be honest I didn't expect it to make such a noticeable difference but I am glad it did. Highly recommend!! ~Coop

I recently ordered a sway bar for my 05 sequoia after being told on the group buy thread it would fit. I know they make a big difference as I had one on my 03 tundra. My 05 sequoia has a 5 link rear suspension that much to my dismay includes a sway bar so IT WILL NOT WORK! Now I have one more tundra part I need to sell. It is not visible till you climb down underneath as it is tucked up over the rear axle. todd
Hellwig Anti-Sway Bar Commercial Installation Costs?
Hello:
I'd like to purchase the Hellwig rear anti-sway bar for my 2002 Tundra. I do not have the skills/tools to install it properly. Has anyone had it installed by a Dealer or other commercial vendor and, if so, will you kindly advise regarding your satisfaction with the job and its cost, please?
Thanks,
Jack

I had my local tire shop install mine. $40.00
I printed out the installation tips found here on T/S and the Tech
had it done in about 25 minutes with me holding the bar twice.
This is one job you may want to do yourself. If it's installed incorrectly, it could lead to an accident. At a minimum, check their installation after it's done to be sure everything is in order.
Hellwig bar gets a big thumbs-up from me... enough to inspire my first post! I have to say I'm somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of subjective response. I am noticing a good improvement in handling (vice those who claim to notice no difference), but not when just tooling around city streets (vice those who seem converted after pulling out of the driveway). The biggest change has been through medium-to-high speed cornering and changing-radius turns. My 02 4x4 AC tracks MUCH truer and holds a set MUCH better than before installing the bar. The "wallowing" sensation through corners has disappeared almost entirely. If I had to summarize, I would say my tallish truck now corners a lot more like an unmodified modern sports sedan (think Altima or Camry) than a truck. That's a big improvement. Tremo's install guide is a must, BTW. The install is fairly straightforward (certain steps inspired curses and invocations against the bar's engineers, i.e., driver's side "square bolt plate"), but the additional help from Tremo is invaluable. The suggestion about preinstalling the end links PRIOR to mounting the L-brackets is worth a lifetime subscription to TS, all by itself!
Plus, I can now at least keep up with my girlfriend, AKA Leadfoot, in her 05 Corolla S. If you are thinking about these, stop thinking and just order them.
well, santa was good to me and the tundra this year! brought us a hellwig anti-sway bar and some lighted abs running boards. just installed the hellwig. took about 2 hours, 1 in the dark to get it centered. a short test drive confirms improved handling and better tracking on mild road imperfections. can't wait to drive to work in the morning and give it a good test drive!
running boards will go on later this week! thanks santa! i'll be a good little elf next year for sure!

You will REALLY notice that swaybar in the turns, the Tundra will stay alot more level and planted. Definately the best mod I have done to my truck.

Received my Helwig from JC Whitney. 159.00 free shipping. Spent about 2 1/2 hours putting it in. Probably 3/4 hr just trying to tighten the stupid plate with the bolt. Couldn't keep it from spinning. Just used a regular nut on the other side w/split washer and locktite. Much simpler solution and less agravation. The locknuts provided are simply too tight for this type of install. The instructions are really poor. It wouldn't take much to provide a decent set of instructions and photos. That said, I did not have any clearance problems with the brake lines or shock mounts, the handling difference is simply amazing. It doesn't feel like the same vehicle. So far the Magnaflow 14586 muffler I had installed last week and the Helwig anti-sway bar have tranformed my Tundra, into a much better personal vehicle. Have nothing but respect for this forum for the information and knowledge of the members here.

I would use the lock nuts.
To keep the plate with the welded bolt head from spinning, use a long jaw c clamp through the large round hole in the frame to clamp it down so you can tighten it easily. Makes the job easy. ( I fought it as you did on the first bar I installed)
I used the lock nuts also, but mostly because I'm stubborn. I'd just keep an eye on the nuts since they're accessible through the wheel wells. I ended up putting a piece of metal about 1/4 x 2" x 8" under the funny screw deal and finally got it to keep it from spinning. I did use mucho cuss words while doing it. My wife stuck with me to the end though. After 45 years she's getting used to it.
i just orded mine today! should be here and hopefully installed by thursday or friday, im stoked!
After reading all of this, and all of the other (almost hundreds) of other Hellwig related threads I think when I get a chance my next modification will be a Hellwig anti-sway bar. At the time I install it maybe I'll install my Predator bumper guard while I'm at it. I bought it a while back (last September) and still haven't installed it. The "hard" part for each one is getting a second hand (if necessary) for positioning and installing.
I may try to solicit the help of a friend from work.

I installed my helwig on my own with no problems. If you don't get a helping hand don't let that stop you, it didn't stop me.
