Aloha from Ewa Beach everybody. I have a little problem and hopefully some of you guys may be able to help me out. My other ride is a lifted (4") 92 Ranger 4X4 and the safety expires in October. I know I am supposed to get the RECON sticker/inspection, but will not be able to schedule an appointment until November or December. Does anybody know on Oahu where I might be able to get a new Safety check until then without all of the hassle? I still have the stock rims/tires and would be able to throw them on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brah, good luck. I had problems getting my truck inspected and I wouldn't even call coilovers a lift. I went to 3 different stations and the last station I went to gave me a guilt trip, "we normally don't do this kind of truck, but...". I barely passed, I had to promise to change out my clear corners, mount my front license plate, and change the bulb in the third stoplight above the rear window. I had my truck for almost six years and this was a first. They must be cracking down on the inspection stations. This was all in Kaimuki though. I would think country would be a little more.....well.......country
Yeah, I have not gotten a big response on this. I did find a place that will do it in Mapunapuna. I am removing the body lift now and putting the stock rims/tires back on for it. After this I am going to sell the Ranger. I see lifted trucks all over with no RECON and do not know how they get away with it let alone get a safety check. It's not worth it! Wish I could own a lifted truck but guess that will never happen here on Oahu....sucks! Thanks anyway for the input.
Yea, I feel sorry for you guys on Oahu. I want to sell my truck to my kid brother on Oahu but it doesn’t look too good for him. People are telling him that coilovers won't pass, you need all the paper work for all the aftermarket mods, and on major mods it would have to be installed by a shop. That totally sucks!
Hey guys,
Check out this site: http://www.hawaii.gov/dot/highways/a...s/ruleshwy.htm, look for Hawaii Administrative rules - Title 19. Also Chapter 134 - Approval of Reconstructed Vehicles. I may be wrong, but I did not see anything regarding coilovers being illegal or major mods needing to be installed by a shop. When I spoke to the recon guys, all I was told was "as long as it can be aligned". I think I'll go re-read it too. Anyway you can download PDF files on all recon regulations. Hope it helps.
Keith

Yeah, I have downloaded the same info for RECON. The only thing you need is an alignment (done within 30 days). You no longer need paperwork for exhaust, rims, etc. I have no problem in scheduling the RECON inspection, just do not have time for it until NOV or DEC. In the mean time my safety expires in OCT. Once I get the safety, I have more time to deal with the RECON.
Howzit,
I lived on Oahu for 14 years and struggled with Recon so many times. I had a lifted Chevy straight axle truck and had to remove the 3" body lift because state law doesn't allow more than 3 inches between the frame and body and when you add the body mount spacers, it's more than 3 inches. They will actually go with a ruler fail you. I took out all the body mounts and ran the straight 3 inch pucks, what a rough ride. I had to put on flare extensions on my bushwacker cutouts, so that it covered my tires. I had to get alignment within 30 days of the inspection and alignment has to be within specs. With my lift, it was impossible to get within factory specs, but my friend tweaked the machine to give me the readings.
All this took months to do and I got pulled over twice with expired safety check and expired registration. No safety, then no registration.
The safety inspection sites are being monitored and can be fined $1000 for giving out tags on "illegal" vehicles. Don't blame the inspectors, blame the fricken State for finding yet more ways to tax us. I would give you my recon sticker, but the last safety guy here on Big Isle scraped it off.
Hell ya recon sucks...though I got my 1st appt. scheduled for nov 29. Keep second guessing myself if I want to get the SOS drop kit now

Though I didn't have alignment papers for the hellwig sway bar, but the inspector was nice enough to let it slide...
So for those who are going to get recon and got the sway bar, make sure you have your alignment papers ready. I figured that the sway bar wouldn't count, but the inspector said that technically ANYTHING you do to your suspension requires you to get an alignment within 30 of installation to within factory specs.
I thought I was going to fail because of my HID's, but it wasn't listed on the paper, and when I had the hood open for him to look at, he didn't mention anything about the ballasts. *fingers crossed.*
