Here's some tips from "been there, done that":

1) Watch your wallet.

2) Wear sunscreen while you are on the beach.

3) NEVER EVER walk on a coral reef in bare feet, whether it's in or out of the water. ALWAYS wear some type of shoe.

4) Watch the sunsets.

Default In any tourist destination...

I highly recommend that you rent a condo w/ kitchen or kitchenette for the week instead of staying at a hotel or resort. Much cheaper, much more enjoyable, and the money you save can easily pay for the groceries and a car rental instead of being blown on resort restaurant prices!

Has worked for me in the Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, and in Kauai!

Other than that, enjoy! Decide early on what you might like to do, since sometimes it takes several days to arrange (Scuba lessons/diving, places on island to see, etc.) Otherwise the laid-back days go wayyyy too fast and before you know it, it's time ti leave and you didn't do or see all that you wanted to.

ENJOY, have a GREAT time!!

I just got back from there Monday!!!!!!

For a cool condo place w/ kitchen try the Aston Mahana in kaanapali; ~$200/night AND its right across the street from Star Market

As earlier posted sunsets and beach walk are mandatory.

Dont try to use Mapquest to find directions to anyplace!!! They have the road #'s ALLL WRONG. Get a good map from your rental car place.

You may also want to check out Mamas Fish House up in Paia. Most Excellent food. Get a reservation now tho, otherwise you'll spend a fortune at the bar waiting (www.mamasfishhouse.com)

Try to check out Hana. Its a long (2.5 hrs, 3.5hrs from kaanapali) slow trip, but plenty pretty. Hike to the 7 sacred pools and up to the waterfall is also a must. Bring plenty of skeeter replent!! If you want a different route home take the backside route back. On the maps it is posted as 4 wheel, but its a gravel road.

You may want to go check out Haleakala (sp?) crater. Its way up the mountain past 3000 feet, so its a bit chilly compared to sea level

Lastly, just be sure to relax!!! If you dont want to do anything dont. Just chill and of course HANG LOOSE!!!!

By all means drive the road to Hana. It’s a road that you can only average about 10mph. It has got to be the most twisty road in the world!

Awesome! Happy anniversary!

I've been to the Big Island and to Oahu, but I've not been to Maui yet. I think we'll try it this winter. Let me know how it was when you get back.

I can second DJ's tip about the reefs from personal experience. That stuff can be razor sharp!

Above all relax and HAVE FUN!

Just being there is great. Lots of different things to experience. One of my favorites - for a unique change of pace , is the Maui Myth & Magic theatre experience of "'Ulalena". This is a play by ARRA - Montreal, who does the Cirque d'Soleil stuff. Nice for a cool, relaxing and moving evening that captures an essence of the island spirit.

OK, back to the "active sports" recommendations, guys!! Judy

With so many of us who spend time in Maui, maybe one day we should have a get-together (sans our trucks ) in Maui one day. Maybe we could find some locals to provide surrogate Tundra-comfort!!!!!

1. Hana Highway is long and painful. Do a helicopter ride instead.
2. Don't eat at Mama's Fish House. Great food, but the prices are over the top.
3. Do a snorkel trip to Molokini crater. Can't be missed. Make sure they take you by the Turtle Cathedrals after the crater.
4. Insider's tip on the greatest restaurant: Haile Maile General Store. It's hidden in the up country, outside Makawao. Gourmet food, reasonably priced.
5. Do the Haleakala crater trip if you're so inclined. I'm not, so I can't recommend it.

I agree with Tundra Rose on "'Ulalena" it is pretty good. As far as food goes if you go to a luau use caution around chocolate pudding looking stuff and salsa looking stuff. They are not what they appear, but give them a try anyway.

We've done all three of those. Nearly everyone was sick on the snorkel trip because it was very choppy that day. The fish however loved it.

The bike down the crater was a lot of fun. But, keep in mind your bike trek down the mountain is only as fast as your slowest rider. The experienced, fast riders like myself get placed in the back. The inexperienced, slow females, err riders are placed up front; you get the idea.
