I saw this post a while ago and I thought it would be great to start a thread about the good memories you have of growing up in Hawaii, you know, "da hanabata days" . Actually it doesn't have to be the past, it can be the present as well. So many unique things here, food, people, beaches, mountains, everything. So lets go gangy, tell us your stories!!
Das me, born and raised. I actually grew up in Waikiki on Tusitala. A bunch of houses that is now just an empty lot. At around 5yrs. moved to Kapahulu, walking distance to Waikiki. Used to be a Wall Rat, kinda. We used to make a train and run/slide on the Slippery Wall down to Currents. Those were the days when ABC Store was on every other corner, now it's every other shop. We camped at Nanakuli Beach Park every Summer...actually...we lived there, pretty much, the whole summer. I would love to do that again but it's almost impossible ,with the permits and all. At the time, all us kids could think of was who could catch the biggest Tilapia in the Stink Pond. Picking Wana for Uncle Bundo and grossing out when he ate it. Parents would lay net at night, and pull 'um in the morning. Always had choke fish, and choke Sharks, as evidenced by the many holes in the net.
I could go on and on but I gotta act responsible and get some rest for work tomorrow:cry:
I used to live down Wailele St in Kaneohe next to my aunties house. A friend of hers, a marine, gave my brother and I a used LAW (light anti-tank weapon) when I was 10. We used to get sky rockets and launch em out of it at the banyon or what ever large tree that had lots of birds in it. Damn, birds would fly all over. One day, when someone called the police on us, my PAL basket ball coach was the one who showed up. Well, he took my LAW, but gave it back to me when I graduated H.S. Some 8 years later.

Last I seen him, his new hang out was the longs drugs by foodland. I also heard that hes a war vet and actually has a decent paycheck fromt he govt. How did he get that name anyway? Ever since I was a kid, everyone called him mango man. who knows.. hes a kaneohe legend.
I was told he was a war vet, but drugs got to him. Never knew his name, nor heard anything about paychecks. My mom used to bring him food, but he never spoke to her, he'd just smile and mumble something. I used to see him near ben parker alot and he used to sleep sometimes by the library. He definately a Kaneohe legend.
Eh, I think he got his name because his hair looked like da kine stink kine "Mango Weed" from long time ago. You know da kine that get the red hairs on da buds and make your fingas all sticky....
