We are coming to Maui in MAY.
I would like some opinions from the local crowd.
Is KIHEI AKAHI a nice place to stay?
There are going to be 5 of us and we need a 2 bedroom condo type place.
Can anyone recommend a good place to eat. Trying to stay away from to much of the tourist crud.

There are a million condos in the Kihei area so I can't really tell you if that's a nice one or not. I only really know of the resort type condos (like in Wailea or Kapalua). I'm sure it will be ok. Most of them are pretty decent seeing as Maui tends to have many repeat visitors so these places want to keep your future business. It's not going to be like staying at the Grand Wailea or anything like that but I'm sure you're aware of that already.
As far as good places to eat, in my opinion, Maui is not the greatest of the islands in terms of good local food eateries. I am born & raised here so I am pretty used to the food, but I think the other islands have way better local places. The best ones I think are Sam Sato's (noodles and manju are their specialty) in Wailuku and Da Kitchen in Kahului or Kihei for good Hawaiian food. Maui does have good Pacific Rim Cuisine but they are pricey and somewhat touristy. But I enjoy it. There's a lot of outdoor stuff here so get out and enjoy it.
My wife & I got married there in 04 at the hyatt hotel. Since then we have been there 2 more times. I personally think the food at some of the hotels lual's " i dont think that is how it's spelled" is some of the best food plus you get a show, but it is touristy. Lahaina is a pretty cool place, lots of restaurants, bars, and shops, and at night its the only party scene we have found...If you get a chance go snorkling at black rock, it is bitchin!
I stayed at Kauhale Makai in Kihei for a week about two years ago. These are individual condos, so quality can vary unit to unit (up to the owners). Request a high floor level on the ocean side for the best view. BBQ grills, laundry facilities, etc. Went in April and the beach in front of the condos was pretty much empty (direct ocean access). I also stayed at the Sheraton resort and actually preferred Kihei for the lesser traffic and much easier ingress/egress of the condo than the resort. If you like to be active and just use the room for sleeping, the resort is a PITA trying to park your car in the parking garage, walk a 1/2 mile to the room, etc.
Jeep highly recommended if you like that sort of thing . There's a couple of really out of the way parks and lava tubes. By the way, take the biggest, baddest, flashlight you have for the lava tubes. So black it just sucks the light out of most flashlights (no wall reflections).
The condo was FULLY furnished (towels, dishes, toaster, cleaning supplies, utensils, paper towels, silverware, cooking pans, blender, etc.). Here's some condo pictures:

There is a Place in Lahaina at the south end of front street (and Shaw if I remeber correctly) called Pacific O's. Its back (by the beach) in the back of boardwalk type shopping area. There is small Whalers General Store on the road front. Great food and even better Pina Colada's
Good Idea to stay away from the Chain Resturants...Over priced and the food's not all that great.
Right on Vic! I'm headed out there too in March to see family on Oahu though, not Maui. But, some friends of mine are from Maui that just moved up here, I'll ask them what's up with that place and for some good local grindz!
