Default Replace Key Fob 03 Highlander

We have a '03 HL that we bought used. It came with just one key fob. My son lost the key and the electronic key fob. the dealer estimated the replacement to run about $125-150. Ouch. Most of it for labor to get into the car and reprogram the security system.

This is not a critical piece of equipment for us but...
Two questions:
1. Is there a place to purchase something like this used on line or not at full OEM cost?

2. Is there any other way to reset these?

thanks

The key fob is not a problem. You can simply buy one off ebay and program it to your vehicle. There will be a code on the back of the fob, make sure it matches the item you're buying. I bought one for my '04 for about fifteen bucks. I'll paste the programming instructions.

The key may be a problem. My '04 does not have a transponder key, and your '03 may not either, depending on trim. It's worth a dollar to have walmart or home depot copy your key to see. If you do need a transponder key expect to pay the dealer or a locksmith to make you a new key.

As I said, this worked for me, for the fob. Best of luck with the key.

There are four different modes you can use to program remote door lock functions.

Confirmation mode allows you to check the number of transmitters recorded.
Add mode allows you to add a transmitter without disturbing existing transmitters.
Rewrite mode allows you to replace all existing transmitters with new ones.
Prohibition mode erases all transmitters and turns off the remote door lock function.

Confirmation mode. To check for the number of remotes programmed into the car:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF three times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves at about 2 second intervals. The number of times that the doors lock is the number of remotes that are programmed into the car. If the car locks/unlocks 5 times, there are no codes registered.

Add mode. To add a remote without disturbing existing remotes:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once.

7. Within 40 seconds, press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter at the same time and release.
8. Within 3 seconds, press either switch and release.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once if the registration was successful. They will lock and unlock twice if the registration failed.

9. If you have other remotes to program, go back to step 7 within 40 seconds.
10. Insert the key in the ignition or open a door to complete registration.

Rewrite mode: To erase all remotes and add new ones:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF twice, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves twice, indicating that you are in rewrite mode.

Prohibition mode: To erase all codes and disable wireless door lock function:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF five times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves 5 times at about 1 second intervals.

This is great. We have a base trim level HL. The ignition key has a plastic head on it, but no electronics I'm quite sure - I keep a duplicate key w/out the plastic head on it on my own key ring and it works just fine.

Tell me about the code on the back of the fob. Our used vehicle only came with one fob so I don't have a second to compare it to. Is this a part number? or is the code specific to my vehicle?

Further searching online and I saw this item listed online $34 fits the following:
* 2001 - 2003 Highlander
* 2001 - 2003 Prius
* 2001 - 2003 RAV4
* 2000 - 2004 Celica
* FCC: HYQ12BAN - is this the code I would be looking for?

Thanks!

My '03 Highlander key fob has the same FCC number listed below as well as
RSS-210 and DENSO. Hope this helps.

Do you think this would work for my 07 4Runner key fob?

Kstar, first I will offer you a trade, for my 04 Highlander, which comes with two key fobs.

If that doesn't help, then you can go buy a second fob, or befriend a valet and steal one from someone else. The programming isntructions are the same as above, but the fob is different.

FYI - Used replacement key fobs can be easily found on ebay too. I needed 2 for my used 2005 - got them both there. One ran $20 shipped and the other was $25 or so...

Hi bepperb,

Do you know if these programming steps will work on a 3-Button FOB for a 2003 RAV4 S ? I know obtaining a replacement master key is another story, especially since I do not have the original.

Thanks.
