Just wander if it stainless or regular steel.

Tip:

Take a strong magnet and see where the magnet sticks as yu follow all exhaust componenents front to back.

I would use a cheap Automotive telescopic magnet to reach the vehicle's exhaust pipes, resonator and muffler.

If magnet sticks strongly to any section, it is Steel, Not Stainless Steel.

Some low grade/chrome plated stainless steel will stick to a magnet ,BUT very weak by comparison to 100% steel.

Magnet sticks well to all exhaust components. I guess it is not stainless. Looks shiny tough.

Yeah, I believe only Lexus has SS on some of their high end models.

My HL exhaust was very shiney when new also. Fooled me for a second.

True SS will tend to turn blueish like Chrome does when it gets very hot when it is new and shiny before it turns dark from water and heat cycling.

Not sure if magnet gives definite answer. According to this Stainless Steel - Sorting and Identification Tests magnet test can differentiate "Austenitic (300 Series) stainless steels from other steels." Do you know if magnet sticks to Lexus exhaust?

Yeah I agree, Check this site out too.

Is stainless steel magnetic? Does it depend on the amount of chromium, or nickel alloy?

If it is high nickel it is non magnetic.

One true way to tell, is to see if an intentionally caused scratch in one area corrodes.
SS will not rust at all if scratched.

Interesting thread. I like SS and use SS hardware on all my aftermarket addons if possible right down to Fog light hardware Etc..
I did notice however SS fasteners tend to be softer than steel to some extent.

Sorry for the blab, and veering of the exhaust system topic.

In my opinion, If yu were to ask the dealer or Toyota themselves I doubt yu will get a conclusive consistent answer. If your exhaust was trully SS it generally would be documented and listed as a selling feature in the Model Brochure.

Can't hurt to ask the "source".

In the end ,I feel that a high magnetic attraction indicates pure Steel.

SS steel will have an obvious weak attraction if any by comparison.

Friend of mine has 2003 Lexus RX300. I looked at his exhaust and there is some corrosion on the pipes there. Nothing major but it is definately not stainless
