HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Body Side Moldings", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Can anyone confirm for me that there is a Nationwide backorder on '08 highlander body side moldings? The dealer said there is an issue with them that Toyota is investigating it. Anyone know anything about this?
I spoke to someone at Carson Toyota(above site) and they said it was available. But ,I cannot rely on word alone. they are a reputable dealer however. Check them out if yu have't already.
Of course Color is the key factor here I imagine. Could be a shortage of a specific color.
Food for thought...
When the 2001 Higlander first came out, 99% of owners wanted a center console which it did not have.
Toyota made a drop in center console (a dealer part) , and it was on back order and in limited supply.
They made a limited supply because by 2002 the HL started to come with the console. And there were never enough to go around. 01 owners were fuming.
Getting back to the 2008 Side mouldings....shame on Toyota for doing this and not providing mouldings from the get go.
Toyota plays games with much requested options.(especially first year production) Even on a very expensive Crossover as the new HL.
Question: If yu were to order an HL at the dealer with the Color Keyed body side mouldings, do yu think that the dealer would have a hard time getting the "Port" to install it and that this would hold up your delivery?
I think perhaps not.
The Toyota "Port Facility" is set up with all accessories needed to deliver vehicles. They have accessories such as Hitch Recievers, converter harnesses, mud guards etc. These are inventory that is out of the Toyota Dealer Franchise Parts Network. It is TMS inventory. Toyota makes good $$ on port installed options.(an additional avenue for profit) So TMS holds onto desired accessories for the port when there is limited supply. This can cause a glut. And this varies by US region.
So, in theory, Body side mouldings could be on Backorder at the Dealer level, and only available at PORT for new vehicle sales. This is common place for Toyota.
This might or might not be the case. Something to think about.

Yes that is what I am talking about. I did buy the vehicle and negotiated them to put on as part of delivery, but they are saying that they are unavailable due to nationwide backorder. They also implied that there is something wrong with them and toyota is investigating the solution. I called another dealer and they said they can get them tomorrow, but without ordering them I wouldn't know. Now it is a he said, he said game.
Ok I will answer my own question. Toyota issued a TSB on body side moldings due to the adhesive failing. Toyota has put a hold on selling and installing these until the adhesive issue is resolved.
I agree. I know have confirmed this with two different dealers. They said it is not specific to the HL but all body side moldings, so maybe it is a supplier issue.
BTW, why did Toyota NOT give us standard equipped 2008 Highlander with Body Side Mouldings like 01-07's????????? LT[/quote]
Seems like bad marketing (and people make six figure salaries for making these decisions!?#) . Before buying my HLer I originally wanted a new model Rav 4. When I saw it didn't have body side mouldings it turned me off to the RAV. All I could see was all those dings I would have to touch up each year on both sides of the RAV. Salesman said they just don't come with them and didn't mention anything about ordering them after the fact.
Just goes to show you how important first impressions are when shopping for a vehicle. All turned out well though, love my HLer.

If it were me, And I had a newly purchased 2008 HL, I would find a color keyed side moulding set, irregardless of existing poor adhesive ...
and remove the adhesive with 3m Adhesive Remover, then apply Automotive Grade 3M adhesive tape, then install it on my 08 HL!
I have done this on many body side mouldings when I worked in the Auto Body Business years past. (doors get repainted and the mouldings are removed and reused if undamaged. An "Industry practice"
3M adhesive tape is used as a replacement adhesive. It is indestructible and will never come off on its own, unless yu want it to.
This my friends is the only immediate FIX/Alternative for 08 HL owners.
I would do this ASAP, if I could locate a set of defective mouldings.
I don't want so much as a ding on my new HL doors. Why should I wait????? Dam, Toyota raised the price of the 08 HL by 6% and didn't offer any Factory installed door mouldings????
A TSB should be given to dealers to do just this.
Again, Shame on yu Toyota !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know yu are listening!! Yu always lurch this site!
