Default Check Engine!! No Heat!! Please Help!!

I drive 2001 Highlander and the other day the Check Engine light came on and the heat no longer works. I took the car by some shady shop the other day real fast and the guy said it was some kinda solenoid or something (I can't remember really) and it would be $1500 to fix it! After hearing that I didn't believe him so I just left. Does anyone have any possible idea what could be wrong and why the heating system would trip the Check Engine? Please help it's very cold and I am very cheap so I need to fix it quick and low-cost if possible. Thanks

In general MIL light and no heat have little correlation to each other.

    read above post...

Scan for trouble codes. And also link to the post regarding 'No Heat'.

Our 2004 Highlander has 65000 miles on it. We justed started having problems with the interior heat/cool knob. Our mechanic said it would be at least $600 to replace the whole "kit" under the dashboard. However, if we "play" with the temperature control knob, we eventually get the temperature to change. We have to turn the knob back & forth if we are changing from cool to hot or hot to cool. Once it works, it stays at that temperature. The first morning I wanted the heat on, I played with the knob for 20 minutes. Sorry, I don't know anything about the check engine light.
