These keys are "chiped" - so you have to get a blank that's designed for the HL. Then key has to be taken to the dealer so that the vehicle can be programmed to recognize it (can't do yourself). FYI -- There's been deals over on ebay for a keyless remote +
a blank key as a combo buy, might want to consider that if you need both a key and a 2nd remote???

make sure yu are getting an OE toyota chip key. A dealer will not program an aftermarket chip key ... and many are out there.

I went to Toyota parts and bought a blank chip ket for $37 ..then had it cut at a good locksmith, then I brought it to the dealer to get programmed with their Toyota Scantool. If they also cut the key, they will charge yu 5 times the cost of using a lock smith to do the cutting. The Dealer is really only need to program the chip of this key. Any locksmith can do the cutting for $3-$7 dollars. And they do a better job if yu ask me.

Whichever is better for yu. But I do recommend buying the key outright from parts. ,as the service dept will mark up the $$ for the key alone in addition to the programming .. I have seen dealers cut and program for less than $100.

It really is a scam that yu cannot program it yourself!!!!!!

My 01 Avalon allows me do a program of a chip key without the dealer.

BTW, the keyless remote fob can be programmed by yourself on the HL. No need for the dealer.
