The secondary filter is for FUEL VAPOR ABSORPTION and does not impede air flow. It is part of the emission system. Do not worry about it, removing it will not do anything.

LT is correct [QUOTE will agree these air filters don't really improve much performance on unmodded setups. But they save a hell of alot of money. And they won't get restricted for many more miles over an OE.

MY OPINION is , NO the K&N will not gain you anything nor should it hurt anything. It saves money by not having to buy a Stock type filter over the years, other than that its a waste on non modified vehicles. Just my opinion. OE for me.

But..... They have been known to POSSIBLY cause Check Engine lights.
Sometimes they works flawlessly and sometimes they dont.
You be the judge.

I have been following the K&N debate since its inception as I have been around these reusables for so many years.

I have never experienced a Toyota related correlation between any DTC codes and K&N OE fit drop-in products.

I cannot speak for Ford, GMC, Chrysler and Nissan or Honda.

The only sensor in a fuelied Toyota engine that can be focused on is the MAF.

MAF are by nature delicate instruments. And I also say that if yu were to randomly bench test a supposed working MAF yu would find that it is not calibrated well and is out of spec. Yet it will function.

The tolerance on these mass produced sensors are not close. Ohm checks indicate this variance .

And,they will fail for so many reasons.

I have no connection with K&N. I won't brag about them to EVERYONE.

They have a viable benefit for some. It sounds like overkill. But the following is not smoke and mirrors especially if yu understand what a MAF actually is and how it works.

K&N Response to Mass Air Flow Sensor Concerns

K&N Response to Mass Air Flow Sensor Concerns

Again, if yu are squeamish, just don't use their product. But do stay with OE Denso air filters!

Dare I say, K&N will not void your warranty.......

TRD reusables Air Filters(essentially the same design) are outsourced and yu will be unable to find any info, technical or otherwise regarding them.

But in the end ,it is a Toyota Branded product. That is important to some people not "in-the-know".

BTW, the secondary permanent filter that mustang refers to is for the emissions system as he states. It is two layers with charcoal in between. It does not generally impede air flow pressure. I could see replacing it after approx. 100-150K miles however. I have seen these getting really fouled out at about 70K miles. Probably due to infrequent filter replacement.

BTW, most, probably all of the current Toyota MAF sensors incorporate a thermister which reads Intake air temps. I have seen great variances in these readings when testing, this causes a multitude of issues for engine driveabilty and fuel economy.

No DTC will be produced. And this won't be readily apparent.

And IAT is a critical value for efficient Timing, Combustion and Burn with Toyotas late model engine designs.
