Default Backup Camera users, please help!

As you may have read on my other post about backup sensors, my father has an 06 Highlander and in his older age is having trouble backing up without banging his bumper.

Does anyone have experience with backup cameras and separate monitors? Basically, I need a camera, preferably with night vision AND a little monitor just for the camera.

I am curious to know which camera shows the widest angle. I am worried if I go with the camera instead of the sensors, that the camera will not catch the corners of the bumper.

Please help me with this. I really would love to get something for my father for Christmas this year and help him out.

Thanks everyone.

I found this at Target.com. ANY THOUGHTS?

I don't believe that one is better than the other. (Sensors vs. Camera)

Having both might be the best assurance on this subject.

Installation of the camera with regards to position...height etc. is very important from my experiences. YU could end up with poor visual coverage.
But most cameras properly installed will work.

Backup sensors come in two flavors of technology, however they both have their strengths and weaknesses. They tend to false find or not "see"objects depending on the type of object, etc.

I feel only a combination of both visual(camera) and audible (sensors) will provide the best protection of the rear end of a vehicle.

Some High end vehicles are showing up with both of these backup aiding devices.(both cams and sensors)

I feel any aftermarket camera will work fine. They cannot really see the exact corners of the bumper. They are wide angle and generally distort at the extreme bumper edges. But they are sufficient enough.
Try examining a camera setup installed on someone elses vehicle to see what I mean. Try a dealership.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your input on this.

I went to Target tonight and took a look at the wireless camera and it looks good in the box, but then I ran some searches online and it sounds like since the camera uses Blue tooth technology there seems to be a lot of interference. Unless I can find a good backup camera WITH wires, then I think I will go back to the original plan of the bumper sensors.

If anyone else has any thoughts or experience with backup sensors that work well, please post your comments!

Thanks again and have a great night!

If yu want a high end camera "a la carte" ( monitor to chosen separately)

I went with the new Sanyo from Crutchfield. It is designed with sanyo's Air Cam technology. Yu can get three views . Two of them are digitally corrected and are calibrated for distance markers that show up on the screen. The "birds eye view" is indeed different...it appears the camera is directly overhead of the rear bumper. It really is accurate once calibrated properly . And it retains the calibration indefinitely until yu decide to readjust it.

Sanyo CCA-BC200 Universal rear-view camera with image correction at Crutchfield.com

I patched it into my OE Nav, but yu could just buy any monitor ...even a Rearview Mirror monitor screen would be convenient and unobtrusive to the interior..

It really is cool and works as described. Lighting at night is perfect.

Remember, yu pay for what yu get in a backup cam or any type of camera.

Stay away from the CMOS type cheapo cameras.( typically found for around the $80-$100 price!

Yu want at least a 1/3 CCD type camera for quality and low light conditions.

Good luck

LT

My 2 cents - for an older person, I'd think about doing both a camera and the sensors. Better to have overkill and the camera seems to be a good way around any false alarms from the sensor.

You wouldn't need to do both of them at the same time - maybe the camera now and the other system in the Spring?

Sorry - don't have any specific recommendations on the gear.

Yes, having both features seems to be showing up on High End vehicles as options.

I have that exact camera setup (got mine from costco instead of target) on my highlander and it works fine. It does not have night vision and the rear lights are lacking so I also got these cabela back up lights installed.

Cabela's -- Deluxe Back-Up Light Kit

I put the monitor in the sunglass visor area to hide it. Was worried about heat from the summer, but that doesn't affect that area much.

The camera works okay. For 100 bucks, it's worth it.
