Default Homelink Mirror Install '08 highlander

Just installed the gentex Homelink mirror on my 2008 hl sport. Install was really easy, took me about 10-15 minutes. Hardest thing was taking the overhead console down.

Heres a pic with the console down. To remove the console you have to pry the front end off first (front end towards windshield). There are 2 blue tabs that hold the console in. Mine were really tight, but eventually came out.

Heres the picture of the moon roof harness. I spliced into the harness to provide power and ground to the mirror.

heres a pic fro the back of the mirror. The mirror i got off of ebay came with the wire cover, that goes from mirror to the headliner. Looks really good when completed.

Only problem i had was taking the console down. It was really tight, and I was afraid of breaking the console. Just make sure you pry the front end first (end with sunglasses holder). Their are just two blue tabs holding the console up.

I used a volt meter to find the constant 12v and ignition 12. Also the moon roof harness has a ground wire, everthing was there. Wires routed from the mirror up into the headliner really nice. All and all it was pretty easy.

Would the same steps/wiring apply to those of us who have a base 08 HL? Just wondering if the wiring harness is still up there even though I don't have a sunroof or any electricity running to my fully manual rearview mirror...

Just want to know before I go digging into my overhead console since it sounds like something I'd only want to do once

Great pix of the install BTW...

doing this stuff requires a volt meter. $15 at radio shack.

How could anyone do this on a guess, hunch or based even on skits. I always double check even skits(schematics) with my DVM as I don't trust a skit. They can fail yu. A DVM must be used to verify all circuits yu are working on. A volt meter just doesn't lie.
My rule.

Default Wire colors '08/09 Highlander mirror install

When you pull the console down there is a junction box above (I have the moonroof so I'm not sure what the non-moonroof has up there) - unplug the harness and peel back the protective wrap - the white with black is the ground, the solid black is B+ (both of those are thicker than all other wires in the harness) and the yellow wire is the switched accessory lead. I just added the homelink/compass/autodim mirror and it was pretty easy. I got the Toyota OEM mirror for an 07 Avalon Part number PT374-07050 for $234 from TRDParts4U.com. It looks IDENTICAL to the Gentex that is pictured so I would go for whichever is cheaper. I put one of these in my 07 Avalon so I figured it would work in the Highlander and it does. Toyota stopped putting instructins in the box - If anyone needs them let me know and I'll scan them and post, the only thing you really need to know is that the center wire is the ground and the wire with the white stripe goes to the accessory - the remaining wire goes to B+. Other than that, everything is pretty obvious.
