Default 01 Highlander Stereo Upgrade

My wife drives an 01 Highlander with just the basic stereo (I think it is the premium model but not JBL). We would like to upgrade it to add Sat radio and Bluetooth capability if possible.

Any thoughts as to how much of a pain this would be??

Give this thread a read - talks about some of the issue in general...
- Seems like you'd just use another stereo head instead of the JVC?

I've only upgraded my head from an OEM non-jbl to a single din unit. It was pretty easy. Got a harness kit, plug adapter, and head unit.

I would go to crutchfield's site, not to buy, but to do research on what parts are needed and what will fit the highlander. it's a resourceful site. They have sales from time to time, which are competitive.

I've bought often from Crutchfield -- when you price out the harness adapter and trim kit from other sources, often that's the higher price for their head (that includes those things for free). I find getting all the stuff in one package from a single vendor is easier too -- they really ship very fast. Their instructions are also pretty good - I'm experienced but for novices they are an invaluable job aid.

So net/net: They come out pretty close overall on price -- but agreed, if Crutchfield has a sale, even better.

Yu can add on HD/Sat radio and Blue Tooth components to your existing Head unit. But a change-out to a completely new unit may be more feature rich and cheaper in the end. Your call.

The HL only comes with either a base radio(single CD+casette, non amped) or the JBL(6 CD+casette, w/AMP)

You never find the JBL upgrade(premium radio) on a base model.(01-05) At least according to the option lists I have on hand.
For 06-07 JBL can be had in the Sport and Base models as an option package. It rare to see them come from Japan like this.

One tell tale sign of a true JBL Head unit would be that there is NO fender antenna. The JBL Premium radio always has AM/FM Diversity Antennas in the rear two windows.

LT, does that mean I have the JBL Head Unit? Because I have AM/FM diversity antenna in the rear windows. But my head unit is only single CD/cassette. It does have the JBL logo in the face plate. I'm confused!

I have an 07 Highlander with exactly the same JBL head unit as you describe. A single CD and cassette, It has the JBL logo on it and on the larger speaker grilles. It has the amp and the diversity antenna in the rear windows as well.

I do have the JBL Premium stereo, I just looked at my original window sticker. It says that I should have 8 speakers, but I only counted 6, 4 on the front doors and 2 on the rear doors. Where's the other 2? Does anyone know?

No JBL in our HL01. Will either get Sat radio/bluetooth add ons or bite the bullett and buy a Pioneer Nav system which has it all.

the last two i believe are in the back, near the hatch. I'm pretty sure that's where i've seen them. Maybe I'm making it up and I'm an fooling myself, but yeah. It seems like i've thrown my audio to the very back of the car before using the tweak-tools it comes with.

Couldn't point them out, but i think they're far back. Sorry for sending you on a goose chase if not tho x_X

Thanks, but I think I figured it out. The magic number is 6 and the keyword is location. The 8 speakers are in 6 locations according to my window sticker.

2 Tweeters in the upper front doors = 2 Locations
2 Mid-Bass Speakers in the bottom front doors = 2 locations
2 Two-way speakers (they counted this as a pair of speakers in each door) in the bottom rear doors = 2 locations

Total = 6 locations

No speakers are behind the second row for 01-07's.

For those with the JBL labled head units with diversity antennas...

Are yu absolutely positive that your CD section will not accept more than one CD?????????????????????.

On mine, I "load" six total CD's. Yu might want to double check this, as a friend of mine assumed his only took one CD because he only saw one slot on the head unit (same JBL system) But it took 5 additional.

All sales literature indicate what I said to be true. The owners manual backs this up as well.
Just a thought.

I can only insert 1 cd into my player. When I try to insert additional cds they are blocked by something in the slot.

OK, I imagine then that yu don't have a "load button" for the cd player.
