HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fender Flares...Pics?", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I know this topic has come out w various members asking how to install, etc but anyone have a pic of a highlander with the flares installed? Just wondering if this is a mod I should pursue.
Soon i'll have flares on mine. I need to take them in today to have them installed while she's in the shop.
It's a look that I like a lot. I'm getting the black flares for my sundown red pearl. I think they offer a whole other aspect to the vehicle from the mud flap options (im not sure if there are models now that allow for BOTH flares and flaps). Gives the vehicle a little more bulk in the stance when you look at it.
If you can hold out i'll have pictures when the vehicle's ready, but cardomain offers a lot of different images, and once you start searching for flares, you'll see HLs w/ the flares installed as reference pictures
But if it helps, I'm getting them (already bought) put on, and a few others here seem to be pondering over flares as well
I hope this sways you over towards the flares. They add a lot more sport to the vehicle, and take away the old-fart appeal (remember, i'm 19, so luxury can wait XD) However, if you stumble upon the money for the elegant body kit that is out there
Anyhoo - I like the flares, and they offer a nice bit of room for play with the tires as far as pushing them out. it adds about an inch/inch .5
The only problem I have is being brave enough to park in certain spots
Dad and I were chatting and we agreed that matching colors would deminish the look of the mod, and I can say it does. There's 2 other HLs in the neighborhood with flares, and they match (green and beige). Still looks nice and sporty, but it adds a more 98 4runner look (nothing wrong with that, just not my groove).
let us know what you decide on if you get any on your own
The Flares were never sold or available as an accessory here in the Northeast or Cali.
Only sold and offered in Southern States and Gulf states(Texas area where yu are) Toyota sales regions.
There are tons of HL's where I am but none can be found with the Flares.
The Toyota Dealers will not sell them up here. Has to do with the way Toyota sells their cars around the country. Strange I think. But one can always mail order them from the south I guess.
that's strange... gotta love the south! Don't mess with TX. Yeehaw and all that junk XD
That's neat to know though. I definately like the flares MUCH better than the flap/skirt combo. Sad to hear it's difficult to get them for some of yall
Mail order definately works. It's a pretty good sized package, but the weight isn't bad. The box is probably about 3.5'x3.5'x3". but i'm bad at guessing measurements, so yeah. Just an idea for shipping costs, if you know how to figure that.
It's a good mod. Still love looking at my HL, and everyone else seems to agree it does a lot. THe 2 tones make a big difference in visual perspectives, i.e. noticing the body, then noticing how the flares fit to the body, rather than seeing the body with wider fenders.
They arn't very bubbly, like you see on some durangos/ older passports. Of course, any flare will make a bubble from the rear veiw, but the back body shape absorbs it a lot. Good design work via Toy.
Well worth the money, imo. But yall see pics, so decide on your own
The Flares were designed and manufactured by another company. Then approved by Toyota as a licensed accessory for these two regions. I don't remember what company. Toyota subcontracts many accessories in this way.
Gulf States Region and Southern States Region Toyota parts are independantly owned and they are able to decide what they offer in their own sales region. And, they chose to offer Flares for the HL.
This is also why the 1st gen HL's can get the LIGHTED running boards in these regions, whereas up north and elswhere only get Non Lighted running boards. (a different design which will not fit with the Flares.)
The manufacturers Name or ID number was stamped on the Flares. As is the case with most subcontracted Toyota parts and accessories.
