HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Dealer changed oil at 3k, but light came on at 5k", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Was this just the result of something not being reset at the time of the oil change? Or could they have just not done the change despite printing out the sticker and attaching it to windshield?
I called the dealer and they said to bring it back and they'll look at it.
I'm a little disappointed...the point of paying a premium over a Subaru, Pilot, etc. for a Highliander in the first place -- and having the oil changed at the dealer -- was to avoid lost time. Now I'm looking at losing a half-day of work.
Worse still is that if they did mess up and not change the oil, that means I've gone 5.5k without a change -- and that can't be good for the engiine's long-term health.
Re: Dealer changed oil at 3k, but light came on at 5k
Not to worry, an idiot light (5k mile) reminder that's all. Owners manual in glove box tells how to turn it off - it's like turn on key while pressing the odometer knob for 5 seconds or so (just double check the manual)...
Idiots at dealer forgot to do the reset - car doesn't really know if oil was changed or not...

Its nothing to worry about. Happens all the time at our dealership. I don't think we've had one vehicle leave without work being done. I know with our Chrysler vehicles, there are so many maintains reminders, its hard remembering which vehicles have them, and what type it is.
But just in case, pull the dip stick after every service and check the level & color of the oil, it should be a honey yellow.
Also if you have a tire rotation, mark your wheels.
people make mistakes.

Dealerships can be lazy and make mistakes...Stealerships can be lazy...but also calculate their next ripoof service and who makes for their best victim.
Re: Dealer changed oil at 3k, but light came on at 5k
oil service reminder light always comes on at 5k intervals...read your owners manual. Doing your OCI at 3k intervals is overkill and not necessary but yu make your own call.
