[quote=kathyricks;994054]but all this trouble could have been avoided in the first place if you had simply refilled with the factory original (red) type coolant the first time you drained the radiator.

Geeze... I just did what the Toyota Parts guy told me to. He said use pink it was better and lasts 100K. At the time it never occured to me there was still old fluid trapped left in the block.

but thank you for setting me straight.

The LL Red and SLL Pink are different formulas. The Pink can supercede a Red. But as we can see now, one should completely flush out the Red (with Distilled water) several times to remove any traces of the Older RED.

Be advised...it only takes one introduction of Plain tap water to corrode the cooling system. Then all that corrosion and muck yu find down the road is the resultant affect of this "wrong procedure".
Mixing Red with Pink would not be the direct cause of excessive corrosion.

I finished the coolant exchange this weekend and after inspection the radiator and coolant were in really good condition.

I ended up draining the block, Reserve, and radiator of all the coolant. and pulledthe bottom hose to flush a tiny bit of sediment out. (there is more sediment in the pop machine at mcdonalds)

But anyways i swapped out the thermostat.. very easy and then filled her back up with Pink. But i checked the red/pink mix that came out and it was really in good shape. So i didn't flush the system. It must have just been the color of the radiator and not perfect lighting that made it look so bad because when it was drained into the pan the coolant looked almost brand new.( didn't see any gunk or thick film) The inside of the radiator also looked better than any other 100K+ vehicle i have ever owned.

So KR you were right about the good coolant and no issues..

Did some shopping on Sunday and put on a good 150 miles and it drove great.. seems like the engine has more pep now. Sounds crazy

Thank you

I just had mine done this past Monday and the thermostat replacement didn't seem easy at all; but I guess "easy" is relative. The whole air box assembly had to be taken out to create space and we all know about the numerous connections on the top part of this. There were also quite a number of screws taken out (carefully). Anyway, everything went well--had the hoses, clamps, and the air filter replaced too while the mechanic was at it; he also cleaned the overflow tank. Glad to hear yours went well as planned.
