This is a discussion thread titled "01 Highlander fuel issues", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
My neighbor had an Actron OBDII scanner that he'd lend me. It showed the stored codes. He also had a nice a Snap-On Modus (he wouldn't lend me that one) that did the same thing with more bells and whistles. It youd pull up all the errors and inform you if there was anything else to lok for. The generic readers just give you the code and you have to look it up in a book.
HL is 1900 miles into a 3000 miles oil interval, i checked yesterday and it has burned ZERO oil. i am however going to switch from my current 10w30 DOWN to 5w30 which was advised by the service tech i spoke with yesterday.
at a whopping 15 bucks, i'll go ahead and change out the pcv valve just for the hell of it.
with coils running at 83 bucks each (cheapest online price i could find), i'm going to buy one each pay period and then install all 4 at the same time. wife just had a baby so we can't afford one $400 hit.
trans is going to get serviced probably on monday or tuesday. i've only had it for about a year so i don't know how the previous owner handled it, but its time regardless.
outside of taking it to the stealership, is there any way to check for "Stored" codes? will the average autoparts store OBDII scanner pick it up?
thanks for all the help everyone.
Yes, any Scantool will pick up "P" codes. The important ones affecting Emmisions (fuel economy).
AutoZone will do this for free and print it out. They usually will decipher the actual code to parts in question. Bear in mind that if yu take these codes to another shop or dealer they usually want to run their own "Scan". And they charge yu for it. So don't don't fret when they charge $50 or more for a scan diagnosis. They have a valid reason for running their own Scan!
I beleive everyone who does their own work for the most part should have a OBDII Scantool in their tool box. It's like having an oil filter wrench and ratchet set in your tool box these days. It is an essential item that's not too expensive these days. A $70 scan tool is adequate for the average DIY'er. A $1,000 SnapOn Scantool is not needed.
For what it's worth, if I drive just myself on the freeway MKE to MPLS, I get about 27~27.5. Half city half freeway gets me about 24, in my 04 4cyl 2wd with E10.
Coil packs? I'm not sure that's a good guess at 400 bucks. I would get the ATF chagned, if the torque converters in 3rd and 4th aren't locking, than there's your problem with the milage, and they're slip controlled so the fluid does have an effect on them. Are you sure it wasn't cold when you calculated your mileage? Under about 40 degrees our mileage goes down 2~3 mpg.

you know, now that i think about it, what should the 4cyl RPM's be at with a speed of around 70mph? my v6 tacoma runs at about 2100-2300 RPM's with the cruise set. the HL runs around 3K RPM...too high. maybe the trans would be a cause if OD isn't engaging...
and its hard to calculate mileage when its cold in southern cali. its cold here when its around 70 degrees.
Bear in mind , the Final drive ratio's are different for engine /tranny combo...whether 4WD or FWD. Whether it's a 4 speed(01-03) or 5 speed/dual Overdrive's (04-07)
