HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Aftermarket Fogs", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Was thinking of installing aftermarket lights but would like to use the oem wiring, does anyone know if the factory relay would work with aftermarket lights? I'm planning on tapping the fog wiring harmesses.
You can buy the Scion Xa fogs off ebay for so cheap, I don't know why you would use an aftermarket light. Either way, if you don't have fogs you also don't have the relay, so that's 20 bucks at the parts counter. Then yes, you can hookup a switch at the stalk and use the wires behind the bumper and shouldn't have any problem running either of them.
I got my OE Scion/Highlander Yellow fogs from ebay as well. It came with a Factory Style Lighted Fog lamp Switch( which I used for Aux Driving lights) Harness and Relay was included.
These Fogs snap in to the Stock location of the Front Bumper.as Stock on all 04-07 HL's. I just wanted the yellow lens Fogs...but the whole kit gives yu alot for the price.
I believe I got it for around $65 shipped. Not hazardous to your wallet at all.
The OE Style Switch will snap into a Blank switch location on the lower right side dash by the drivers knee.
I looked at the Scion Xa lights package. What do you connect the switch to and how do you get the wiring from the dashboard through the firewall? My HL did not come with fog lights so my understanding is that I would need to add a switch on the dashboard and add a relay but I can use the existing unused fog light wires behind the bumper.
Right. You just need the standard fog light relay. It's about 20 bucks. It goes in the fuse panel by your left knee (in driver's seat). Then, you either need the turn signal stalk with the foglight switch, or you need to get a switch yourself and hook it up to wires 10 and 11 in the connector to the turn signal stalk. Searching this forum should give you a step by step. You don't need to run wires through the firewall, Toyota's already done that for you.

thanks guys, Ive ordered the relay(10 bucks + shipping) and the switch (tacoma switch) looks like it will fit perfectly into the blanks next to the rear heat switch. (30 w shipping). Hope fully I can tackle this project over the long weekend
OK, I have a relay and lights on order as well. However, I prefer to use the stack, because the three dash switches are already occupied (thanks, rear heat, valet alarm disarm, and security system). I have searched and found a number of DIY turn signal stalk threads, so that is good. I alternatively could hide the security system indicator as it is not a switch, just an indicator light that the alarm is enabled.
However, it looks like there are two stalks options that have fog light capability, with or without auto light control.
By getting the stalk with auto light control for +$10, do I then magically enable auto light control too? Or are there other parts for that function that I just can't be enabled?

Bepperp - the Scion Xa foglights are too small. Your recommendation wasn't clear. The Scions are 3.5" in diameter and the 2007 Highlander needs foglights that are 4.25" in diameter. LifeTech has pointed out that I need the trim rings and that should fill the gap. I'm off to the dealer.

lefranc, yu have the correct fogs. These are what I got. The exact same kit. (Mine were the yellow glass).
These lights sit recessed when snapped into the bumper and REQUIRE the OE Fog light trim rings that snap into the slots where the Blanks were attached. These trim rings will fill the gap that yu see.
Again, these are correct for all 04-07 HL's. Bepperp's recommendation IS correct.
The trim rings are around $12-18 (dealer)last I checked. Depending on whether yu want the Chrome hybrid rings or the standard silver painted ones. They are interchangeable. I like the chrome myself.

Auto light control will require the photo sensor that goes on the dash near the windshield. and probably another controller. Not 100 % sure on that. I will check the schematics.

Regarding the switch...
Do yu have a switch Blank by the drivers right knee on the lower dash next to the wiper switch stalk? It is hard to see except when looking for it.
That is where I put my OE push button switch that was included with those ebay lights.
This blank would normaly be used for the 120V outlet power/on/off if so equipped. My switch just popped in no issues...but I use it to turn on my aux. driving lamps for my Safari light bar instead.
But then again...yu might just have this 120V switch in place?

The cosmetics are done. Fogs (Scion XA thru ebay) and OEM chrome trim rings were installed last week. The look is awesome! I did shear a grommet during the installation so I created some extra work to replace that tiny piece.
Next I need to install the relay. I'm sure there are already instructions posted. I also read instructions to replace the turn signal stalk so that is what I'll do to make the lights functional.
The relay just plugs in near the fuse panel by your left knee (when driving). You'll find instructions if you search. It's the socket with no relay! I don't know much about the stalk, but when I did my remote start it wasn't hard to remove the plastic around the steering column, and it looked like it just plugged in. If you want help wiring a switch, let me know.
