There aren't as many C-Best options for the HL as for the Seq, but this might be useful to someone.
The Highlanders are another Toyota, as well as numerous Lexus vehicles, that have the C-BEST system in them. It stands for Customized Body Electronics System. It is a system that allows customization through the dealer's handheld tester with C-BEST cartridge installed.
The variables that are available for customization are as follows.
Wireless Door Lock Remote Control
Wireless operation Yes* / No
Door ajar warning beeper Yes* / No
Automatic Lock operation 30s* / 60s
All door unlock (one press) On / Off*
All door unlock (2 presses) On* / Off
Panic Alert Operation On* / Off
Door Lock Control (Key)
All door unlock (key turn 1x) On / Off*
All door unlock (key turn 2x) On* / Off
Illuminated Entry
Light Illum time 7.5s / 15s* / 30s
Interior lights illum on key unlock On* / Off
I want to add keyless entry that's not there now. I have auto door locks and my dealer said I only need the key fobs. Another Dealer said I need a module and fobs. What do I need ?
I, honestly, am not sure. You shouldn't have anything to lose by trying the cheaper option. If it doesn't do what they say it will, then I would think you wouldn't be liable.
I do know that the Seq and Tundra have been able to be easily changed from keyless entry only to a full blown alarm just by adding an LED and connecting an existing harness. This means that the hardware was on every car, but only needed to be activated.
It is possible that you have a keyless entry ECU, but it just needs to be activated.
I would ask for more details, but don't let the first dealer know that you think you might have to pay for the keyless box
Just bought a Highlander (Limited) with the factory installed security system is there a way to program the security system to do the following.
Lock doors with ignition on.
Unlock doors with ignition off.
Auto arm after closing doors.
I am also wondering about the security system. The owners manual tells about arming the system when the doors are locked but I'm unable to get it to work. I have the regular Highlander and also really like it. Any pointers on the security system?
I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the door locks can be programmed to lock @ 10 mph on the Highlander as they are able to do on the Sequoia. My dealer knew nothing about this, as they knew nothing about the Sequoia...
Yes, you can get the manuals from Toyota publications. The phone number is in your owners manual.
The Highlander NCF manual is # NCF198U. I think it was about $30. It has semi-technical descriptions of the engine, transmission, VSC, electrical features, body design theory, etc.
looking to prgram the alarm for our 2002 highlander. i did it on the tundra and the wife wants it on her car now. i want to make the doors lock when you turn on the key. we have the factory alarm that came with it. has a red panic button on the back of the remote and lock and unlock on the front. i search a couple of ways and could not find what i was looking for. does anybody know if you can program it to do it? let me know thanks... maisano

I have posted a lot on the CBEST system a while back. It is on higher end Toyotas and Lexus. It is an EEPROM based system that lets you customize beepers, light levels, light times, passive arming time, key fob unlock operation, etc.
I have a Sequoia and a Highlander and while you can have the dealer program the locks to lock on the Sequoia, there is not a way to do it on the Highlander, at least through '02.
For more info ask for the New Car Features manual from Toyota publications. Get the first one for the Highlander '01 I think. Subsequent years are just updates.
Had my wife's Highlander in for the free 1-month check up and oil change. I asked the service manager to change the keyless entry so that it would unlock all doors with one press on the remote. He claimed to hook up their "computer" and find that the setting could not be altered. Is this true or is he clueless?
Another somewhat unrelated question: does the sunroof on this car "auto-park"? I find that if I don't release the button at exactly the right moment, the sunroof doesn't stop in the right position -- most other cars I've had with sunroofs automatically closed and parked the sunroof after a single click of the control switch.
