Hi,
We are at 50K miles and looks like we need to replace the original Goodyear Integrity 225/65R17 tires on our 2004 Highlander. Calls to 2 dealers in the Boston area brought two different recommendations - one would put in Michelin LTX and the other Yokohama Geolander. The Michelin website, identified Energy LX4 and Latitude Tour as recommended tires. tirerack.com had a bunch of other recommendation including the OEM Goodyears.
Pretty confused and would appreciate help from this experienced forum in trying to decide.
1) Is 50K miles on the OEM Goodyears a "reasonable" result? They seem to be among the low cost replacements recommended - what are the cons of going with them?
2) Does the Limited edition Highlander require different tires than the Standard edition (the Michelin site had different recommendations)?
3) Are the recommended Michelins good value for money? They seem on the expensive end - what are their pluses?
Also, any experience with getting the replacement tires at BJs Wholesale Club - good idea or not?

Getting 50K out of your Integrity has been done before, Some like that Mileage Factor and all. And they feel convinced to get another set just because of that! Yu did above average on those Integrity's, However I'm sure that at 20K these Integrity's were probably useles traction wise etc. as many have complained about the traction on wet and snowing/icey road conditions.
The Latitudes are nice. So are the others. Stay away from anything Yoko's IMO. I feel if yu go with a more agressive tread that yu will encounter more "road" noise than yu care to deal with. some have stated that the LTX's for instance were way noisier than the OE G/Y Integrity's or Mich LX4's. But the LTX's and Mich Cross Terrains have much more bite for sure. Tires are a very personal call. Many have different expectations as such.
Tires are a hard call. There are alot of things to keep in mind. Price is big, but handeling is very important. Poor tread wear rating means the tires can be worthless in 20K to 30K miles. Good tread wear can last 80k miles or more if they are properly maintained. Michelin is known for making tires that will last and still be good until the end of their life. Just having rubber that will last 80K miles is no good if they won't still channel the water out. Michelin also claims that their tires have much lower rolling resistance, which will save gas. They claim enough to pay for the tires.
Thanks much for your insights. I have boiled the choices down to Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV and the Goodyear Fortera Triple Tred - largely based on reviews/ratings at tirerack.com and other such websites. The tread wear rating of 420 on the Michelin vs 600 on the Goodyear is a bit of a concern. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of these two tires for the Highlander?
I put little stock in the UTQG standards across brands, there is no independent authority to measure their tests and they vary quite a bit across brands. I would call it a wash between those particular tires, as they are both highly regarded. Personally I wouldn't get the goodyears because I haven't ridden on them, and haven't talked to anyone with them on a HL, and they cost the same (at least as the LTX's). If they cost 25 less apiece than I would probably bite (but I'm a cheap @$$)
edit: it's worth noting that the reason I haven't talked with anyone with them on a HL is that they're relatively new. Now that they're on sale at SAMS in 225/70r16 I'm sure it won't be long.
Either will be better than the origial tires. Either will last longer.
Your "limited" has 17" vs. 16" on the standard.
The Geolandars and some other "truck like" allterrain tires may be better in the snow, but worse for dry handling and noise.
Hi
Most limiteds came with the optional 17" alloys, while the standard H/L has a stock 16" alloy (or even some with 16" steel wheel).
Nice of Toyota to make the spare a matching ALLOY full-sized spare for our 2005. I'm sure they did this for most years too.
We are blessed with a REASONABLE TPMS too, that uses the tire rotation speed sensors instead of the more expensive and troublesome individual tire valve transmitters. They may have changed this for the new generation 2008 HL, don't know for sure.
Last week I put on 4 Goodyear Assurance with comfort tread, and there was a big difference on my 02 highlander from the Goodyear integrity's that came with car. Much smoother and quieter ride. If you’re in an area with lots of snow etc then I would invest in Goodyear fortera with triple tred. My boss has these on his ridgeline and he swears by them
I just bought a 2005 Highlander and was told it was a "Limited" from the dealer. It has the 225/70 16 tires and wheels. What are the differences between the Limited and the standard? Mine has the woodgrain and full leather interior and a couple other small upgrades. Is this the Limited?
I have a 2004 Highlander Limited. My Highlander says Limited on the front fenders. It originally came with Michelin Energy tires which were quiet on the highway and are supposed to have a low rolling resistance. I replaced them with Cooper CS4 Touring T tires and am happy with those as well. I think they have better snow traction if that is important for you. They may be slightly noisier than the Michelin's but not by much and it depends on the road type. I have gotten around great in the snow this winter with my 4wd. We got 9 inches of snow one storm and it plowed right through. So you may want to look at those as well. They are available online from Discount Tires, Wheels & ATV | Treadepot.com. they currently have $50 off $400 purchase on their site if you are interested. I chose them because they appeared to be a good tire for a cheaper price than the Michelins. I have them in the 17 inch rim size, not sure what is available for 16" owners.

01-07 Limited HL's come with 17 inch rims and Mic. LX4's or GY Integrity's.
Less options as far as tires go.
The 16 inch rims on base models have more options.
I find that Costco for instance is very expensive but they will justify it by giving yu lifetime of tire free repairs and also Nitrogen gas as opposed to air. Also with lifetime top offs. Also yu get lifetime rotation. All wheels get torqued correctly with a torque wrench. They are meticulaous for sure. But Costco is very strict about what they will offer in a tire for your car. They will not deviate and sell yu what the computer won't allow. No upsizing allowed etc. Whereas standard tire shop or Tirerack for instance will give yu more options.
BJ's I'm not sure of.
I would look seriously into the Mic. Latitude Tour (235/65-17) (one upsize)It is more refined and quieter than the Mich. LTX. My friend/neighbor had got them for his 04 HL . Locally had for $130 each/ mounted bal.. I don't think tire rack can even match that. His tires are blowing my LX4' away in the Snow this weekend.
50k is great for the GY Integrity. Many get high miles, but many have said the traction was lacking early on with low miles on this OE Goodyear Integrity. What were your observations???
I haven't seen many owners going a second time around on the Integrity tire. But they are the cheapest tire out there for a name brand OE tire .

We also live in snow country and needed a tire that would handle well in the snow...along with all the freeway driving we do. Had Goodyear Wranglers on there before. Poor tire for the HL. I too went looking at the Michelin LTX when it was time to replace the tires on our HL. Going around getting price quotes (they are expensive) and my last stop was the shop that sells Cooper tires. They recommended the Cooper Discoverer ATR and with the price difference, I went with those. They've handled nicely in the snow and do well on the freeway.

Living here in MN, and having good threads on your tires is a must for the winterly snow seasons. My wife and I just bought our 3rd set of tires for our 2001 Toy HL last winter and this time around, we settle on the Michelin LTX. Our last one we replace back in 2003 were the Michelin C/T over the stock Goodyear that came with the HL. For me, comparing the two Michelin LTX and the C/T. I like the LTX better due to the threads and handling in the snow during this time of the year. The C/T were smooth, but it was wearing out too fast IMO. Even after one year the LTX still look brand new with its threads.

The dealer should not have to tell yu that your HL IS A LIMITED! It WILL say it on both sides of the HL of 01-07 HL's.
Many people and dealers have installed aftermarket wood grain appliques and dealer installed leather on their interiors! A very popular/common upgrade but aftermarket none the less.
ALL Limited HL's came with Auto Climate Control and the sill plates in the door jambs are Stainless with Highlander logo Emblems engraved. This is a true legitemate indication of what yu have!!!
If yu don't have this and the 17 rims yu definitely don't have a Limited.
2006 +1/2 (like mine w/April Prod Date) -2007 HL Limited's have the Limited Emblems on both rear doors.
01-03 Limited Hls. only came with the standard alloy 16 inch rims...while 04 -07 Limited HL'scame with 17 inch rims. In any event all Limited HL's from 01-07 all had Auto Climate Control!
Hope this helps...and what trim level do yu actually have???
