Is there a technical reason why toyota keys are so big, say compared to a GM key?

More the teeth, more the power (# of teeth on the key is proportional to the # of teeth on the starter motor ).

The toothed part of the key? or the handle part? You may have a smart-key. In that case, don't lose it, replacements are NOT cheap.
