Default 2003 Highlander Leaking Fuel

Noticed the Highlander smelled of gas on Thanksgiving morning. The car was out of the garage but was dripping fuel onto the driveway. I had it towed to the selling dealer today after the FD secured the fuel tank. The dealer just called to advise that a roll-over ball in the tank had activated and was lodged in the filler neck. The charcoal canister was also saturated with fuel. Total cost to replace the canister and the fuel tank is $1479. The dealer stated that the roll-over ball is part of the safety system which during an actual roll-over would prevent gas from leaving the tank. Anybody have or hear of issues like this occurring in a parked vehicle?

As an update to my first post, the service manager for the dealer contacted the District rep informing of the situation. The District rep. agreed that Toyota would pick up the cost of all parts and I would be responsible for a reduced labor rate (warranty rate) of $71/hour. PTL!
