Question O2 Sensor?

The check engine light in my wifes 2003 V6 Highlander came on soIi took it to Auto Zone to get the code.

They told me it's the O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1.

Then he says $170 each and there is two of them in bank 1 sensor 1.

This makes no sense to me, Anyone familiar with this code?

Thanks in advance

48 state V6's have three sensors total. One each exhaust manifold collection pipe Bank1 Sensor 1 and Bank 2 Sensor 2. The third is after the catalytic, Bank 1 Sensor 2, I remember.

California cars have a pair of catalytics, and an extra sensor, Bank 2 Sensor 2.

Sensor 1's are the pricier Linear Ratio sensors and will affect driveability, and Sensor 2's are the toggling type and will keep you from getting an emission sticker.

Check Rock Auto. Denso and Bosch are both fine.

Before you go and start spending big $$$ changing the o2 sensors first reset the light and pull the battery off for about 30 minutes.

For the O2 sensor:
There is only 1 sensor for Bank 1 sensor 1. There is a 2nd sensor right after the first bank 1 cat, but that is bank 1 sensor 2. The good news is the Bank 1 sensor is right in front of you on th exhaust manifold facing the radiator. it should be a super easy DIY.

For the Cats. My 1MZ 2001 V6 is not supposed to be a california model and has 3 cats total, and 4 o2sensors. I am guessing your 03 V6 would have the same emission standards as mine.

Bank 1 is next to the firewall bank 2 is next to the radiator. Bank 1 refers to cyl. 1 side and bank 2 refers to cyl. 2 side. If you replaced the sensor next to radiator for a code for bank 1 sensor 1 then you have replaced the wrong one.

O2s last 8yr/80K miles. You are long overdue to change the O2 sensors. Remember the P0420/P0430 are the related to emissions and quite hard to root cause since O2s, MAF and bad pre-cat/cat are all mapped to these codes.

Change the O2s and they will go away and offcourse u will get better MPG.

Get O2s from NGK Spark plug, NGK Spark Plug wire, NGK Platinum Spark plug for High Performance and Racing.

Good luck.

For the record...Yu never stated what DTC code #'s were found!

What are they???

What yu supplied is not the DTC..but merely a generic interpretation of the scanned code(s) by AutoZone's database.
