Default How check xmission fluid level? not so simple

2004 highlander
2 wheel drive v6
when "cold" thats 75 degrees at night here , the level on the dipstick is at, or slightly above the higher of the two "cool" marks.

after driving it a while the level is below the lower of the two hot marks

who rules? mr hot or mr cold? or is the hot only after a 30 mile hi speed run. My hot is 10 miles of driving in 90 degree weather with a/c on? is that hot?

Cold is room temp. Hot is operating temp. My guess would be that 10 miles isn't enough, to get to full temp, although that's surprising to me. Do you have a tow package/aftermarket ATF cooler?

When you check "cold" you've started the car and gone through the gears?

ATF level is always checked when HOT. Have someone sit behind the wheel with tranny in D. Pray that the one behind the wheel does not take his/her leg off the brakes and have another person check the levels via the dipstick.

Theoretically it should be between the H and L markers, but IMO that is nonsense. I have always overfilled the tranny a little above the H mark and no issues and since I drain/fill tranny every 15K miles which happens quite often, I just don't have the patience to get it accurately.!!!! But then that justs me.!!!

If I go through all the gears it doesn't matter between park and drive, on mine. But it's still sound advice, you need to at least go through the gears before taking a reading and make sure every passage is full, and most importantly the torque converter is full.

I think since you have the towing package your ATF isn't at full temp after your drive.

I wouldn't be too worried. You're between cold full and hot full every time you check, right?

yes , when cold -- slightly above the higher of the two cold marks

when hot, slightly below the lower hot mark

Here is how the manual says to do it. Out here in the extreme heat, setting them overful will cause them to leak out the vent, so we have to stick to exactly what the manual says.

Yes, that should be hot enough.
