Default Highlander Tranny Media Filter -- Need to hear this

I bought the remote Hayden filter mount and was shopping for the 3/8" hose in a local store. So the discussion turned to the built in filter and I adamantly (later realized how ignorant I was on the VB mounted filter) stating there is no filter but just a screen on the VB. Now the rep goes in and gets me a Wix filter for the vehicle, to my surprise there is a brown media over a mesh connected to the filter.

What happens if this media gets dirty and clogged? Will it starve the tranny, is there a bypass, can the media get destroyed and get sucked into the tranny, all these ?s are running in my head.

If it were a oil filter we have a metal cyclinder around the media to protect it from disintegrating, the media I saw spooked me.

I am going to install the remote filter and not have to touch the VB filter until 100K. But I am very curious this hasn't ever been discussed in this forum -- for the matter of fact I wouldn't have know abt this media filter unless I had that discussion with the parts rep (not Toyota rep but local parts dealer).

Very interesting! I am about to drop the pan on the next ATF change on my '04 V6, 4WD with 122k on the clock. I have the WIX replacment filter looks like just a screen to this guy?
I use to work at TMMI, have a '04 Highlander 7 pass, 4WD for my family with 120k on the clock. Can you help me take it to 300k?

Apparently Toyota added the media from 2006 onwards.
So if it is just a screen then you are good, no replacement needed.
