wish theyd put some torque numbers on there...depending on how that 270 horse stacked up, i wonder if that engine would work in a 4runner or a taco? doubt its a lot of torque, but surely they can massage that engine in to a v8 for a tundra...thatd be pretty nice...
I thougt I read that the mileage would be 38 city and 30 highway. That is impressive. Add to that the fact it has 270 HP; it should be a nice vehicle. Now all they need to do is apply that great technology to a vehicle I am interested in owning and they have a winner. The fact that they are doing this is great though.
Did you guys notice that they said the hybrid highlander would carry a more "permium" price tag?

wtg toyota, encouraging people to buy one! that's exactly why i didn't get a prius or a (whatever honda calls theirs)...30k for a soapbox derby car with a motor, or 24k for a real nice truck? no contest.
Is the highlander unibody construction or truck-like frame?
270 hp is impressive, but only 28mpg? Thats nothing to write home about. The standard V6 highlander is 18/24 mpg. You wont be saving any money once you pay an extra $5-10K for the hybrid. And how much will you be able to tow with a tiny Camry based highlander, even if it does have 270 hp? My V6 chevy malibu gets close to that in combined feather-foot driving (170 hp). Id rather have 200 hp and 40+ mpg. Prius gets 60/51 mpg. I expected 28mpg for a hybrid V8 tundra or sequoia. Nobody but tree huggers and money wasters will buy that IMO.
First Time Poster and Visitor to the site. I really really like the 2004 Highlander for my wife. We have a 4 month old and my wife currently drives a 96 Honda Civic (4dr). She really wants to get a new car sometime this year and we have decided that we will buy a Highlander. I figure we would wait until Sept. to buy when we might be able to get a good deal on an '04.
My question is should we wait to buy a 2005 Hybrid Model? I don't believe they will be available until early (??) 2005. Does anyone know exactly when? Second is that I'm sure these will be sold at a premium to the standard '04 models and most likely we will end having to pay full MSRP for a new '05 if we buy when they first come out. I like the idea of saving on gas - I figure we could save $1000/year (20,000 miles/year) if we go with an'05 however because we are paying a premium for an '05 plus the fact that we will most likely be forced to pay MSRP, I'm not sure if it makes sense to wait. Thanks for your input and thoughts...

The Hybrid will be a very nice one to get, but are you willing to pay over MSRP and be on a 6 month waiting list? That's how long you have to wait for the Prius and since this is a SUV, tons of people will be flooding into buying one.
The Hybrids will also be only in a trim equivalent to a fully loaded Limited, so will be priced accordingly (i.e more expensive than a Limited). That's something additional to keep in mind if you were considering purchasing a lower trim level.

I was looking at an auto show slide show on Yahoo. Next to a picture of a Hybrid Highlander there was a small news article from the AP. They basically stated emergancy crews were learning how to avoid catastrophes that could be caused by their high voltage electical systems.
