HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Highlander Mud Flaps", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
My Dad just bought a certified used 2001 2WD 4cyl highlander to replace his POS Volvo. It goes well with his camry and corolla. He wants to know if they have mudflaps? His isn't equipped with mudflaps, but he thinks they might keep the car cleaner. Are front/rear mudflaps available on the 4WD highlanders as an OEM or aftermarket part?

You can purchase mudflaps for the Highlander. They will set you back about $70/ea from Toyota. I actually had a failure (crack/tear) in each front flap. The dealer fixed them free of charge; they had never seen a failure.
Both front mudguards on my 2001 Highlander have torn. I have seen several other Highlanders with the same problem. Is this common, and are the dealers replacing the mudguards under warranty?
It's been a long time since I posted to this very same thread, but I had to bring it up again. My replaced mudflaps have now torn and I see others almost every day on my drive to/from work that are torn. I just looked through the recall notices and there is nothing about the stupid mudflaps. Are other people seeing this problem? I think there is clearly a design flaw in these things. The flaps on my Tundra have seen lots of abuse and they have never even gotten scratched. My wife drives the Highlander and these flaps only ever see flex due to the wind. I think Toyota should fix this problem.
One of my front mud flaps is torn and I've never ever abused my Highlanders (it's always been driven on paved roads and always slow down to around 5mph for speed bumps or road dips).
I've seen plenty of other highlanders with torn mudflaps, so I would agree that this is a design flaw.
I've already replaced mine once, and the dealer assured me that these would be better. Well, they're not, they cracked too. My wife has never been anywhere that would tear the flaps, but they crack where they are screwed into the body under the car. My Tundra's have been covered in mud/muck to the point where it's all resting on the tire and they have never cracked.
I'm on my third set of these mudfalps and drive only highways. The dealer told me that WATER will tear them. This needs attention!
A 6 year old design flaw that Toyota will never address. 1st gen is done and gone.
I added black mud guards ahead of each OE mud Guard. I shopped till I found the right size. And I just used the OE Mud guard holes as a template and just screwed the new Flaps over the OE's. Looks great if yu ask me and gives good support to the OE's. I did fronts and rears. Less road chips and mud also.
Ours (2002) craked also. No hard use at all. One dealer said not a warranty item, another fixed them under original warranty. I love Toyotas, but some dealers are just a waste . I will do this patch one day to keep the replacements from cracking again.

If it fails within the bumper to bumper warranty period its covered.
FYI,
I noticed that the Highlander, aka Kluger, in Japan, Europe and Australia doesn't get these contour fitted color keyed mud guards. They are not even listed as an option/accessory anywhere that I've searched on overseas Toyota sites.
Maybe due to durability issues? Seems to be a USA item only.
A Flat, generic looking mud guard, Black in color seems to be offered on the rear wheels of Australian Klugers.
Just got finished Groboskizing my HL mud flaps. A little cutting and fitting but not a hard job. Best of all I didn't have to take the wheels off to do it, thanks to the hex head screws. Just a bent allen wrench.
Not only will this 'tip' help keep my flaps from tearing (I hope), but I can see where they will protect the edges of the OE flaps from paint chipping off them and exposing the black plastic underneath. A great idea!. Who said you can't build a better mouse trap? I think we should call it " The LifeTech Procedure " in honor of its creator.
