Question Accuracy of Speedometer

Has anyone noticed their Highlander speedo showing about 10% higher than true speed?

I have a 2002 on OEM stock tires and have noticed this. My car is a Canadian import into US by dealer who did the speedo change. Could this be the issue although I find it odd that this might be the cause.

In general speedometers of off probably by 5-10%. So when you think you are doing 60, you are actually doing 54-57 mph.

An easy way to check is in construction zones or areas around town where local police set up a mobile radar trailer to show you your speed.

I know for fact for awhile when I got pulled over for speeding, the cop would always say my speed was lower than what I thought I was going, but I thought he was giving me a break.

Another way is to check using mile markers on the interstate. Using your watch, count how many seconds it take you to go a mile with your cruise set at a given speed, say 70mph. You must be on flat ground to do this so do it in an area you have driven before and know it is flat for at least a mile. Lets say you past the marker in 53 seconds, take 3600 divided by 53 = 67.9mph, about 2mph less than what you though you were going.

Ours is suprisingly accurate. I verified 2 ways with a "Your Speed Is" radar sign, and with the GPS on my laptop.

With OEM wheels/tires, the speedometer accuracy is 100 percent. This is confirmed with my portable GPS.

Same here for a 2006 base model, speedometer spot on compared to GPS and odometer accurate compared to ten miles of mile markers on PA Turnpike.
