Default How do u remove the shift knob on an auto?

Im thinking about changing to a custom shift knob in my automatic highlander , it has a center consol between the front seats if that matters. How do i remove the knob?

Default RE: Shifter Know Removal

On my Highlander that would require a very unique customer shifter knob because of the overdrive button that is located on the left side of the knob. It would require a knob specific this model of vehicle. Do custom knobs for Highlanders exist?

Default Shift Handle

To change the shifter handle is alot more complex than you might think. Here are the toyota instructions, on how to remove the handle. The wires on the O/D switch are very long and go down inside the shift mechanism.
Good Luck.

A gearing mechanism (transmission)of a motor vehicle that reduces the power output required to maintain driving speed in a specific range by lowering the gear ratio.

In precise technical terms, overdrive means the input shaft on a transmission is spinning slower than the output shaft. Or said another way, the gear ratio is less than 1:1... for example, 0.93:1. In most 5 speed manual transmissions, 5th gear is "overdrive". In some 6 speeds, 5 & 6 are "overdrives".

On automatics, "O/D Off" simply means that the transmission controller will not let the torque converter go into full lockup in the highest numbered gear. In some cars it may prevent lockup in the two highest gears (e.g., 4 & 5 on a 5 speed automatic).

See How Stuff Works for their description of automatic overdrive transmissions. How Stuff Works is a really great site with all sorts of neat info -- my favorite is the 1001 horsepower Bugatti Veyron.

Enjoy.
