HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "When To Sell, Resale Value?", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
THarms;
It's a long way from Kansas to Houston. The HL is White ext and gray leather int and is a Limited, 6 CD JBL, lighted running boards, fender flairs, factory alarm, no moon roof so there is a little more head room and the '04 has the 3rd row seat standard.
Sticker price was $35K+ and KBB lists it as $27125 trade in to dealer, and $29,350 sale to another individual. I would like to get as close to $29k as possible. It has 1150 miles on it now and we put about 30 miles a day on it commuting to work and back.
I am new to this forum and could post a picture if I figure out how, or PM me your e-mail addy and I can send you pix.
Just take a good look while driving and see how high many of these bumpers are on SUV’s and trucks. The manufactures are trying to lower them for passenger car or any smaller vehicle compatibility and the guys buy these kits to raise the front end so they sit higher and level with the back end. A lot of side impact compatibility issues are out there for sure, hence the push for side air curtains.
The roads have turned into a real mess with all of the different size vehicles. Even though people know SUV’s roll easier they feel safer as stated on national news lately. People like the visibility. The 4Runner does real well on all the crash tests, side impact, full front and offset. Plus it's got the visibility!
They reported the information a little different on TV than what is written as to why people like SUV’s.
“Rollovers represent only a small fraction of crashes on U.S. roads but a quarter of all traffic deaths, which rose to 43,000 in 2003, preliminary statistics show. Most rollover deaths occur in single-vehicle accidents.
Rollovers accounted for nearly 40 percent of fatal accidents that involved SUVs last year. Rollover deaths in those vehicles rose by 10 percent to 2,700 in 2003, government figures show
The fact that SUVs are high though is a good thing cause iv avoided countless accidents just cause i can see over cars. A few days ago some of the highway was flooded due to rain and all the SUVs ganged up and went right through drowning all the smaller cars in their wake, the smaller cars had to go offroading on the grass divider to get around.

Believe me, I know. I just want to loose as little as possible. Tried using logic, nogo. I could ask for my pants back and put my foot down, but am afraid of sleeping in the back yard. I asked 9 times before we signed the purchase agreement if she was sure the HL was OK with her and she says it is fine, even after a test drive. We leave the dealer to come back next day to pick up HL, and she starts in that it is too low, she can't see out, it's not a truck. Next day I ask if she is OK with the HL, she says it is fine so we sign more papers and take delivery. On the way home she declares it is too low I don't like it. I ask why she did not speak up before we signed papers, and she says I had my mind made up we would buy a HL. She drives it to work a few times and says she has chest pains from anxiety of riding too low. Sorry to vent, but we are tired of yelling at each other.
Something I learned since MY wife purchased a 96 Dodge Caravan was that I decided to let my wife do all the research, test drive and deal for the vehicle. It was the best decision I ever made. I just tag along and smile; let myself have a good time. My wife has been happy with the Dodge van and her current RX330 which she purchased last year as part of a dual deal with her sister. When it comes time for me to part with my Honda CRV for either a HL or Pilot, I will do my own thing. Cool - we are both happy!
The wife is no negotiator and would just walk in and accept the first offer. I can't let myself get taken that bad. I tried to get the most info available on the price etc and negotiated a pretty good deal on the HL. Dealer said I got it for $53 over holdback, but that may be BS. They probably made a killing on my tradein and made some on the extended warranty. I may try to hold off until the '05 4runners come out and try to negotiate a deal on one. She likes the 4runner and wants a limited of course. I like the 5 speed automatic available next year.
Go to www.cars.com and look to see what is available in your area for sale. Its been my experiece that there is a strong resale factor. Thats one of the reasons I bought (and bought a new one as the used were too expensive!).
I'm currently shopping for a Highlander. FWD or AWD but want V6. It's tough to locate these used right now. Mostly dealers selling them and jacking the prices up high above bluebook in typical dealer fashion. Resale on them used is fairly good considering 2001s are 4 years old now. They still go for 12-15k depending on options, engine, milage, etc..
I'm looking for one in the Tri-state, New York area. If someone has one, let me know!
Just went to trade in my 01 Highlander Ltd today on an 05 Subaru Outback Ltd. The dealer started at $9,200 and ended up offering $11,150 after I walked out...twice. It has 105K on it now, but I walked away in the end because I just can't part with this car. I had the new car at $400 below invoice and the trade-in offer was close to what I was looking for - I was hoping for $12K - BUT I CAN'T LET GO OF THIS CAR! Guess I'm just nuts.

If she can't drive that car maybe she shouldn't be on the road. I cant tell you how many times i have almost been taken out on the freeway by mom's in Surbabans that cant see over the steering wheel. I had one two days ago that was backing out of a resturant and I dont think she realized how long her rig was because she backed right into traffic on the 5 lane freeway behind her. When she got out she said that she couldn't see anyone coming, it was rushhour and there were bumper to bumper cars.
For what it's worth, I have been trying to trade in my 04 limited w/ leather, 3rd row, tow prep pkg. for a month and I am shocked at what dealers are offering. They basically want to steal it. I have only 1300 miles and the car is in absolutely perfect condition and properly broken in. The MSRP was $35,864 and until today the trade in offers have ranged from $26,000 to $27,600. Even car max would only offer to buy it at $26,400. Finally today I received a trade offer for $28,000 against a Volvo XC70 which I am considering accepting. I have until the end of this week to decide. I paid $32,000 for it on May 14th. The Kelly Bluebook list it at $28,825 but it doesn't consider the 3rd row seat option which adds an additional $900.00 to the price. The dealers won't even touch the KBB price which is low to begin with.
If anyone is in the Northwest Indiana area, I will sell it at $30,000 even which is a very good price.
Everyone talks about great Toyota resale and that might be true after 5 years, but all cars loose at least 20% off what you paid when you title them. Don't be like most people, sell it yourself on autotrader. I've sold many vehicles on there with good success. Just sold my Acura TL and got $3000 more than trade quotes.
